RLT pumps are for pressure applications. RLXT pumps are for circulation and wet/dry return. Which type of pump would be used for a return to tank from sump? I would think it would be the RLXT.
If this is so, then what would be an example of use for a RLT pump.

You should use circulation type pump for the sump return unless the vertical distance between sump and tank discharge is longer than 10 ft.
It always helps to check the flow chart of specific pump just to make sure it will be optimal for your application.
RLT pumps are recommended for high pressure applications like injector type protein skimmers and pressure filters. These pumps can also be used for sump return in situation where there is long vertical distance between sump and tank (basement to 1st floor).
