Jacob's 360 Gallon Build

Jacob,

I feel your pain. My tank went downhill and most of my corals died. However, it's on it's way back up right now. :D

BTW - I don't know why your picture disappeared. However, I not that similar DIY Lumenarc clone thread was deleted because it supposedly violated some patent design.

Lak,

What about the polished aluminum? Home depot? I know you and I talked about this a long time ago, at the time some people were making them, and I thought that's where they were getting the stuff. Of course I have lots of sources for metals, but not something for this kind of project.

I think Lumenarcs use some special microfaceted aluminum called MIRO or some-sing. I used to think nothing of it, but the horticulture guys study this stuff to the hilt. They are very picky about the types of aluminum they use. I guess every penny counts. :D

Call the folks at Tower Garden Supply here in Fresno. They can fill you in. They specialize in greenhouse lighitng and hydroponics and some of them reef to. They carry various grades of aluminum and other types of reflective material.

Minh, that's interesting. For the record I never said this is a Lumenarc, just that it's similar in design :)

Taco, thanks for the lead you had me at "Horticultural".

Might want to check Home Depot first. I just read an old DIY post that the stuff Marine Depot sells is thick and harder to work with - not sure if this is the same as the stuff from Innovative Lights.

MHs rule!!! I just switched out 6 x 96watt PC for 2x 250watt 14K SE MH in my 130g (72"x24"x18"). The plan was to run both the MHs and 4 of the PC's but the MHs looked so good w/out the PCs, and did such a great job of evenly lighting the whole tank that im skipping the PCs to save some energy. for the morning and evening lights im going to use some DIY LEDs, which also give that shimmer affect like the MHs.

Obviously PCs are not as bright as the T5's, but imho the MHs look so much better.

on a side note jake, i picked up some carbon from lanxang last night and he mentioned that you had some problems with it killing your LPSs. Whats the story with this carbon?

Nathan,

I believe that the problems I had with my tank are related to that carbon. I never put 2 and 2 together until we used some of that carbon on my wifes nano cube and it started immediately having the same problems that my tank had been having for a couple of months.

I asked her what she did differently with this water change and she said the only difference was she ran out of carbon and used mine.

After removing that carbon from both of our tanks they are looking much better, although mine suffered serious loss, she didn't lose any corals, but a couple of micromussa and acans have still not fully recovered.

Prior to this we were both using ESV carbon, I'm now using Seachem carbon (and really like it). I don't know what the story is with the carbon but I would not use it.

BTW, congrats on the lighting upgrade!

Give me your old tank.. LOL.. Jacob I like the proposed plan I think it would be a NICE HUGE tank.. I'm still thinking of a cube for myself but will probably go with a 180 0r 240 I have a nice sspot in my kitchen where it would fit(got that idea from Hector)

hahaha... we'll see about that. I see there is another cube for sale (check your other thread), wonder if you'll disappear for another few months this time? :)

Well after talking it over with Sandra, she laid down the law and said4' was going to stick out too far from the wall. I'm allowed to go as big as 3' in that direction. In light of that I'm looking for a 6'x3' footprint, or a standard 240 (8x2x2). I suppose I could go bigger with 8x3 footprint if one comes up for sale used.

Right now I'm leaning towards the 6x3 due to ease of lighting it... and I'm trying to get in touch with someone who is selling one, but have not heard back as of yet, it could be a possibility, we'll see.

Well, here's the update:

The deal with the 300g tank I was looking into fell through. I could not get any reliable responses from the seller so I had to assume they were not serious, and it's probably for the best as I would not have wanted to make the trip to LA and have the person flake on me. SO....

I still plan to upgrade, keeping an eye out for a tank in the 300g size (if you see anything come up for sale PM me). I'd consider driving one state, in any direction depending on the tank :)

I am starting to put together some of the equipment that I'll need. So far I have a Tunze 7095 multi controller and (2) Tunze deco rocks. I picked them up here on RC slightly used for a good deal. I'm still on the look out for at least 2 of the 6000 Streams, I'd like 4 of them.

As for lighting I still haven't decided if it will be T5 or Halide. The tank is most likely going to be 6' in length (or longer). If I only use 2 halides what would you guys go with for the ballast, reflector, and bulb setup? I'm not real current on the latest MH setups.

Sunlight Supply Ballast and full size Luminarc or Lumenmax Reflectors. Id go with 14k or 15k bulbs. If you go with SE i really like the Hamilton 14k. Im going to be hooking up my Icecap ballast so i'll let you know how i like those. They are alot cheaper than the Sunlight Supply.

Why would you go with SE over DE? Reflector design maybe?

Also, is that the Bluewave ballast?

Yeah thats the blue wave ballast. I think its personal opinion on se or de. I think the de's fit much nicer in those reflectors.

i dont know if this to much haha

300 gallon fishtank *See Pix* - $2150 (pittsburg / antioch
So up for sale is a 300 gallon truvu brand acrylic tank. It is 6' long 3' wide and 24" tall so its excellent for rays and etc. (2) overflows with a 50 gallon truvu wet/dry. In great condition- no visible scratches. No leaks and never had any. Comes with lights, gravel, heaters, and a ton of misc. items. Take it all!

The following fish are included: an 9" fly river turtle, 9" peacock bass, and a 7" widebar dat.

Entire setup makes an awesome showpiece. Everyone who steps in my house gravitates towards the tank immediately and are in awe over the rays and turtle. Wish I had a dollar for every "aw he's so cute" the frt gets.

Selling complete for $2450 or $2150 without the turtle.

Thanks Paul - I had not seen those on CL. First one sounds interesting but I think just a little more than I want to bite off right now.

2nd one is the right size, but TurVu isn't the best quality for show tank, plus I could have an Envision acrylic tank made new for that price. That peacock bass sounds pretty sweet though! ;)

Good lookin out though! I need to keep a closer eye on CL.
