My hubby and I are going to Jamaica in March. We're staying in the Montego Bay area for now. Our resort offers free scuba diving so we're working on getting our certification.

Are there any good dive sites near Montego Bay?I know Jamaica isn't the best but I'm hoping to get a few dives in.

There still are some interesting dive sites in the Mobay area, and your divemaster, who should be well connected with your hotel, should be familiar with them. Most are seriously degraded from what once was, but even mediocrity can be entertaining. Lots of small fish and invert life, very little big stuff left. You can find most of the high profile reefs by simply observing the dozens of fish traps floats around them. Lots of dead coral.

Be careful. Mobay is a high crime area, and despite what people may say to you with incredibly convincing skill and charm, they are definitely not your friend. Think of yourself as a walking ATM machine, because that is how you are actually perceived. Choose your companions and the places you go carefully. I write this regretfully, as someone who loves Jamaica, lived there for years, and lost his heart to that most beautiful of the Caribbean Islands decades ago. It is what is has become, and that's really the bottom line. You will be pressured. Practice saying "NO" and walking away. Do NOT engage in conversations with people trying to sell you something, which includes almost everyone. Don't even look. Ignore the pleas to "have a look, have a look". Do so and you are lost.

I've only been there once and I loved Jamaica, so lush and beautiful. But i can certainly see what you mean by be careful, crime happens unfortunately.
