Jawfish and mixed substrate??

I am looking at buying a Jawfish from liveaquaria along with a bunch of coral and a midas goby. My sandbed is about 1.5-2 inches deep and has a layer of crushed coral on top, maybe .25 inches if that. I know if i am going to get one i will need to add another inch of sand. My question is this. Could i just collect the crushed coral that is on the top then add the new sand around the rocks and then just replace the crushed coral or should i not even put the crushed coral back in there?

The jawfish will use the crushed coral in construction of its burrow. Your plan of moving it and adding sand and returning it to the tank sounds good.

Shouldn't be an issue, your plan sounds good. And don't get too fussy with it, it's fine if you don't get all the crushed coral out. Jawfish won't mind.

Yea the jawfish won't mind the crushed coral. I would be more worried about having a 100% jump-proof lid. If there is any opening they'll find it.

+1. I have a Blue Spot Jawfish, and he's tank jumped twice, both at night. And both times through openings maybe 1/4"wide. Since the tank is in our bedroom, by some miracle from above, we've heard his jumps (the splashing for them to jump that high, makes a lot of noise) and have been able to put him back in the tank. I am now using that eggcrate grid with window screening wrap that cut to fit the top of the tank tightly.
