Jawfish Substrate Question

I just received my yellowhead Jawfish today. It's in QT with PVC.

I have a question on DT sandbed. Mine is about 1-2 inches. I plan on adding some Caribbean Dry Aragonite so the fish can burrow deeper.

now, do I have to even out the sandbed? or can I leave it in a corner and pile it 4-5" tall. Maybe let the powerhead eventually even it out.

would the Jawfish go for the deeper spot? or will it pretty much stay where it wants and ignore the sand piles?

reason for this is because my sandbed has lot of coral frags now. If i have to evenly spread the sand, I have to move ALOT of frags. possibly even change some layouts

If you built a per-existing tunnel, he will probably tend to go for the tunnel first. Yet I cant say this for sure will work, they will go anywhere they want.

Don't worry about evening things out. He'll make his own sand box out of your tank. I have a bonded pair that love to shovel all the sand into the middle of the tank, right under all my rockwork. I even out the sand to cover my corners up again, but in a week they move it all back again.

Mine choose a spot right up front of the tank for their cave. They don't hang around there much except to mate.

I gave mine a fighting chance and had a large rock that was somewhat hollowed out underneath. I just slightly pushed it into the sub. He immediately took to it and hasn't budged in 6 months now. I bought 4 more and released them into the tank. One small one moved in with the big guy (he's right about 4 inches). The other three I haven't seen since. They darted behind all the rock and are either doing well behind there. Or died. I'm not moving 100lb of rock around to find out. At $10 a pc I'll buy more when I'm ready.

thanks guys.. I'm going to build a PVC cave for it. I bought 15 extra pounds of Caribbean Sand. Going to dump it in the center of the tank. I'll see where it goes from there..
