JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I went on this quest about a 9-12 months ago. Honestly I don't think they exist. I ran an AI nano over my JBJ 28 for about 8-9 months and I just could not get good coloration or growth with it. Even the zoas and palys washed out in color and were reaching around the outside permiter of the tank. Perhaps I just never found the sweet spot I don't know. Personally I would not recommend it. I switched to the first gen Radion and have been extremely satisfied. My tank has allot of sps and I have had really good growth and things are coloring up again.

Thank you very much for the response. After doing some research I have decided against the fixture.

Hopefully some day when Radion's price goes down I will make the leap.

Rather then go LED I am going to go with a quality T5HO fixture.

Your reply was just enough first hand experience to help me make the final decision.

I know the Aquamaxx hob/JNS VS1 is the most commonly recommended skimmer on the NC28 club. I've got to say my personal experiences haven't been as good as some of yours. I have a moderately stocked aquarium. I ran an eshopps 75 for about 2 years and I regularly got very dark somewhat thick skimmate.

I've been running the JNS for 2 weeks now and it just can't pull anything like the eshopps was pulling. It's thin and watery or it's nothing. Looks like the bubble production is good. I've had skimmers now for years so I feel comfortable adjusting them, just not quite what I expected. It is pretty quiet though, slight gurgling and air hiss- no pump vibration at all.

Hey there... I just recently put an Aquaeuro Nano in my JBJ 28. Just remove the pipe and filter, it fits perfectly in the skimmer chamber. You just need to let it break in for about a week or so... you will get a lot of "wet skim"... after that just adjust it and it's good to go.

How far down does it goin the skimmer chamber? I have a power head in that chamber for my reactor.

If it goes down most of the way could you connect the tube and filter back up through the center chamber so help make it easier to tune? I hear that without the tube and filter they skim very wet and you really tune them very well.

Honestly I don't think that will work.... there isn't a lot of room in back of any of those compartments... the skimmer itself barely fits, I had to take off everything to get it to fit.... suction cups, tube and filter. I mine lowered so that the lid of the skimmer is under the bottom most part of my hood (so I can open the hood w/o messing around w/ skimmer) like you have to or used to do with the Air stone skimmer from JBJ.

With that said... it's more convenient the the stock skimmer, works better, it's quiet, and does the job at least good enough for me... considering it's only a 28 gallon tank so skimming is questionable to begin with... all in all I like it.

Anybody tried the Aqualife 115 Skimmer in the NC28g? I've been reading up on it quite a bit and it fits in the BC29 so I'm thinking it will fit pretty good in the NC28g. I was hoping to put it in the skimmer chamber so i can continue running my media basket as well.

Anybody tried it? Krazie:jester:

Hey all... it's been awhile since I posted. Here's a FTS, the tank will be 2 years old in February.

I use the aquaeurousa needlewheel 2 skimmer in the skimmer chamber, so that I can run the media basket I just got today in the center chamber :D I have only been running it a few weeks, but after the break in period its pulling quite a bit of skimmate, though it has picked up some sound too. I'm going to pull it out and see if there is something that got loose and is vibrating.

That is a fantastic CF tank.

Redo of my 4 year old JBJ. Just nuked the tank back in Nov secondary to an ongoing Majano issue.
I considered going LED but have now decided to purchase a T5 fixture or bump up the HQI to a pendent 250 MH. Current is a 14 k Phoenix.
Using 2 parts but, I will have to go to BRS dosing system in the near future as I am dosing too much too often.
There once was a skimmer on this tank 3 years ago, it has run skimmerless since that time.
Low bioload of a old YWG and one lone B/W clown.
Three snails and no hermits.
No coralline algae growth yet.

InTank media basket

InTank media basket

received an intank media basket the other day and surprisingly it doesn't fit in between the overflow and the rear trim on the tank. Has anyone else had this issue?? I really didn't want to but now i'm debating taking a dremel to the rear trim although I don't want to sacrifice the strength of the tank..

What are the dimensions of the in-tank basket? They make one for biocubes and the nano 24 so maybe they sent the wrong one? Mine fits pretty easily into my nano28. The one on my biocube29 takes some adjusting to get it in and out.

Where does the sub pump for the phosban go

Where does the sub pump for the phosban go

I'm new, and pulling my hair out.

I have the Nano 28. Both out side chambers have jets. Where do you place the pump for the phosban reactor?

If whites in LEDs stock hood are blinking-- means your ballast went. Jbj sells them for 100. Happened to me a few months ago. Also lost my 4 3w blues on the corner. Ballast went also. But I replaced it with a meanwell which fit perfect in hood and I replaced the 4 blues with 6 Cree royals installed on single heat sinks which are sold by rapid led. They fit/screw in exactly where factory are. Tank looks much better with the royals. Also disconnected 2 of the 5 strips of the whites in my hood. 75 watts of non dimmable whites I felt was way too strong. Corals are now finally coloring up after 3 years. Growth has always been good but coloring was always a problem for me. So now my tank runs 63 watts rather than the original 89 watts

I have 2 questions for everyone.

1. I have both Accella pumps on at the same time with Hydor Rotating heads and it gives a great random flow to the tank.

However, I use an In-Tank basket with Cheato and a In-Tank Blue Bonded PAD at the top of the basket. My problem is that the Pad impedes flow very quickly (Currently about 6-8hrs) and drops my water level down. This in turn activates my ATO, etc...etc.... What I end up with when I remove the pad is a higher than normal water level. AKA, Bigger salinity fluctuations and water overflow in the basket.

Would cutting the pad slightly smaller front to back or side to side help with this? Is it a good idea? I keep reading everywhere that pads should be replaced atleast once a week but 3 times a day is tough! Not to mention the media cost.

2. My 2nd question is what to do when I go on vacation. I will probably have my Mom come by every few days to check on everything but my ATO only lasts 6 days. I'll be out for 7. I will also have small cups of pre-measured food in the freezer for her so feeding won't be an issue. Just the pad problem above and the ATO are my issues. Suggestions?

Thanks for all the help.

One more question.............

Does anyone run both Carbon and GFO in a Reactor? I currently run a TLF 150 in reverse with Rox Carbon and Phosban and just reverse the flow twice a week to make sure it doesn't clump up. It seems to work ok but was wondering if others have a better solution. I can't run 2 units because I have a Nano Light suctioned to my back wall for the cheato which is working out great!

Thanks again.

Anybody know where I can find parts for my 28g LED pro hood? My daylight ballast just went out and I am having problems with my dawn/dusk lights as well. I find some places that have a few parts but I would prefer to get everything at one place to save on shipping.

Would also be interested if someone has an LED Pro hood they were looking to sell so that I had spare parts on hand. Thanks for any help!

Hi, question does anyone in this thread have any experience with the jbj 28g that has the 89w LED, I'm about to buy one and I will like to know if does lights are any good!

I have heard that it is too white in color spectrum and sometimes ends up bleaching the corals from it's intensity, mainly because there is no dimmer.

Personally, I would go (And will be going) one of these two routes:

1. Hanging a "Maxspect Razor 120w 20.5" LED" or

2. Solderless Rapid LED Retrofit Kit for JBJ 29g Nano CF with manual dimmers.

Good Luck.
