JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

For some reason in this tank im having the hardest time keeping acropora. My Red Planet seems to be fine but has lost all of the green base. All water parameters are good. My Nitrate could be a little lower but isnt to high. About 5-10ppm. 0 phosphate, 450 calcium, 8-12 DKH, 1300, Magnisium. Is the light on this tank not strong enough. Ive been running a 20k XM bulb now for the last 4 months with the actinic upgrade. Halides on for 6 hours, and actinics 1hr before and after. Any ideas why My Acro isnt liking it in there. Its pretty high in the tank as well. Thanks, Jeff

How long has the tank set up? Acropora need stability. My acros have been really coloring up since I changed to a 20K radium. Make sure your alk is rock stable.

Yea i am having the same problem with my acros, the color isnt great and growth is slow. They are healthy it seems good polyp extension and the tissue looks good but the growth is painfully slow. I am still running the stock bulb though, thats my next change is gettting something else, was looking at a pheonix 14k.

kamao, the false wall should come out pretty easy, just take a razor blade and run it along the sides where it is siliconed onto the tank. It should just pull right off. Mine came out when i filled the back up with water a little faster than the front, so i wouldn't think it would take to much.

Thanks for the help. It worked fine! The false wall is finally gone.

Why did you buy an AIO if you pulled the wall?!

Dont know really. Main reason is that i didnt like the surface skimming abilities at all. So i decided to move it, get "bigger" space and use my trusty old Tunze nano filter instead which works great, and then use something like Tunze nanostream or koralia for flow.

Btw, would a nanostream 6045 be overkill for my tank? I only have softies and have no plans for SPS.

I'm thinking about the Nanotuners actinic upgrade... For those of you who've done this I have a couple questions... :)

- Did this increase temperatures in the tank?
- Do you use the pure actinic bulbs, or the combination 10k/actinics?

Thanks!
Stuart

Some things grow... Some dont - Why.

My Zooanthid and Recordia are doing well, in fact the Recordia has Split!

My anenomea, one of my original live stock purchases (Mar 09) has split!

But I cant seem to get good or any growth on the Acropora or the Birdsnest.

Ideas?

I recently ordered the 28G Nano Cube CF-QUAD, I have never had a nano prior and never have used CF lighting. So my question is has anyone kept any type of SPS with this cube with any success? I am still debating on if I want to get the HQI upgrade to keep SPS/clams. I am coming from a 125 gallon system(recently moved and it had to go). Thanks in advance

What are you feeding the SPS? My understanding is that they don't grow much unless you feed them. I only have one newish Acro. that is growing slowly, but my brother in law has had good success with Acros for a while.

How are your Monitpora (if any) growing?

I haven't seen any changes in temperatures, I use a clip on fan over the back compartment. I used the pure actinics, I may use 50/50 next time though.

Dumb, newbie question - The BirdsNest is what type of coral? Dont think Ive got any Monitporas...

Other than "light" we've been feeding the tank with PhytoFeast.

The acro is still alive, atleast I can see polyps (or tenticles) coming out of tips once in a while and the BirdsNest with green polyps still has those polyps but the main trunk is turning white!

sounds like your birdsnest has rtn (rapid tissue necrossis)

What are your water parameters? What type of flow do you have?

Ive been using pure actinics on my tank for about a month. Great color and better growth so far. Finally got my Acros under control, and my Red Planet is getting its green back. Started dosing Vodka about a week ago. Anyone else with a 28g dosing?

Beats me. My acros and other sps have been growing like crazy. But my ricordia have recently been receding and my zoas dont grow at all. I used to dose aminos until I had a bad algae outbreak. Now I only use kalk. My alk levels are rock steady which is what I attribute to my growth. But i have no idea for sure.

I think that SPS grow best under low nutrient conditions, and most soft corals grow best with more nutrients in the water. That would sort of explain why breeze and balloonpilot kind of have opposite situations going on in terms of growth. I'm more in breeze's camp- overskimming and such. :)

Balloonpilot, is your Birdsnest losing tissue or "just" bleaching? My SPS had a similar condition (no RTN but bleaching from the bottom) when my bulb went bad.

This is a picture of what I think is good PE on a Birdsnest. This colony is getting maximum light (for the nanocube at least) and a lot of turbulent flow. What I've read says that don't need that much of either, but my experience tells me otherwise. (The birdsnest frag was just moved up from lower in the tank and still doesn't look that hot.)
