JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I don't know what options are out there for the HQI tanks but on my LED Nano, JBJ used four 3 Watt Actinic/466nm LEDs and they do a great job. Super bright and very blue. I wonder if you could get a set for the HQI nano. Perhaps JBJ sells replacement sets?

So im going to get a nano cube hqi on tuesday and i know im going to want some actinic lighting in there, I know alot of people do the 2x18 compact florescent upgrade from nano tuners, which one would you do? and if your going to choose led, if its a pre-made strip what would you suggest?

i got mine from someone who got it from nanotuners, it's very nice with the cf's. if i could buy new, i'd get the LED

I added an extra MJ1200 in the stock skimmer compartment (aka chamber #2). It was tricky to get in there, you'll have to run it through the center chamber and backunder the wall into chamber #2.

easier just to modify the mj1200 so you can stick it down the chamber. basically, you remove the much of the intake nub that the prefilter sits on, then you cut some of the top part where the wire goes in, and it becomes small enough to fit there.

what the OP is talking about though (i think) is using one of the stock pumps to feed the chiller, instead of being a return pump to the tank. id think it would be possible

Woops...What I mean't was basically get one of the stock pumps, then connect it to the chiller so that it pumps into the chiller and somehow rig the return tube to the stock return hole. Hope that makes sense:rollface:

$50 difference between LED and HQI?

$50 difference between LED and HQI?

Show me where i can get one for 350, i got the hqi for 300 on aqucave

solastsummer, perhaps there's a site I somehow missed but I just bought a 28 Nano LED system at the turn of the new year and I scoured the web for the best deal and it was at AquaCave. Everywhere you look will likely have the LED system with free stand for about $650 (not sure you can find it without the stand) and then all you can do is to apply the RC5 (5%) discount at AquaCave and call it a day. Free UPS shipping by the way. And no, I don't work for AquaCave, they're just a great place to buy from with awesome customer service. (Thanks Enrico!)

Also, it may have been mentioned but if you are going to have to buy a chiller as well, then the LED system would likely end up being a more economical choice in the long run sine the price difference between the two tanks is about $350 so far as I can tell and a chiller would likely run you around the same price. In the long run you'll save hundreds of dollars not having to buy HQI replacement bulbs and considering the lower cost of electricity with the 61 Watt difference between the lighting on the two systems and electricity for the chiller. Of course, the initial cost of the LED system isn't within everyone's budget so if you can get the HQI now, a chiller when summer hits (if you need one where you live), and can pay a little more for electricity along the way then the HQI sounds like the way to go.

Congrats on getting your Cube tomorrow!

The LED hood alone is $400 if someone wanted to convert an HQI over.

onetrickpony, if I'm wrong and you do have a source for these LED cubes for only a $50 difference that's awesome! Please share your source as I'm sure many people would like to take advantage of a great deal.

makes sense actually, BUT then you'd have to run both pumps all the time. what i've found is if i run both return pumps my main chamber overfills.

tunze9002 the way to go on the 28 hqi?

As far as I'm concerned, yes. I searched on a number of forums and it seems to be a favorite. The only downside to it is that you have to either cut away a little section of the tank's hood to get the stock collection cup to fit or you have to buy a StevieT collection cup so it fits next to the hood.

I just ordered the collection cup last week and it should be here today or tomorrow. I've been breaking in the skimmer in the sump of my 90gal and it's already pulling out a bunch of skimmate.
I also just did the YouTube Tunze 9002 air valve mod which made a tremendous difference in the ease and ability to fine tune the skimmer which was super easy!

The downside is that it only fits in the center chamber so you have to give up your media basket or refugium chamber (depending on what you want to use it for) and you have to cut off the mounting magnet (super easy) to get it to fit in the center chamber. This is all unless you decide to get one of those HOB fuges in which case you can just put the skimmer in there, keep your media basket, and have a fuge.

Just my 2 cents but it's got my vote.

Sorry to say, No source , when I ordered mine, there was only the $50 difference between the HQI and LEDs and the quad CF was less than $300 with stand and shipping, (I got the CF) Searching now it looks like the HQI with stand $314 is the hot sale item

You really think moding the heck out of a pump is easier than sliding it under a wall?

Has anyone tried using a reef octopus nano skimmer (NS-80) in the normal skimmer column? I'm looking for a good skimmer to fit in the normal skimmer area.

thanks.

Can't speak to the Reef Octopus Nano (NS-80), I can't seem to find the dimensions on it. I see there is an HOB version, but you are most likely looking for the NON HOB. My guess is that since this is rated for 80 gallons, that there is a slim to none chance it will fit in the stock skimmer compartment.

There is a guy that is using the AquaEuroUS Nano Skimmer in the stock skimmer slot (it's only rated for 20 gallons). Seems to be getting decent results from it, you can check it out over at Western Reefers thread

I did not lose my fuge and I have a tunze 9002 at the center chamber.
What I did was cut the basket and adapt it to fit the left chamber, the one that jbj place their default skimmer. The nano-glo fits just fine placing the magnet at the left pump chamber.
So far the macroalgae is growing and I'm not having any trouble.
