JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I did not lose my fuge and I have a tunze 9002 at the center chamber.
What I did was cut the basket and adapt it to fit the left chamber, the one that jbj place their default skimmer. The nano-glo fits just fine placing the magnet at the left pump chamber.
So far the macroalgae is growing and I'm not having any trouble.

I don't suppose you have any pics of this?

+1 on the photo of the macro in the left stock skimmer chamber. Seems like a really tight spot to put a modified media basket & macro. Great to hear it's doable.

You really think moding the heck out of a pump is easier than sliding it under a wall?

yes. especially when i need to pull out the MJ when say cleaning the skimmer i have it attached to. all you have to do is use some needle nose pliers and break a little off the pump, so i wouldn't say modding the heck out of a pump is accurate. also, makes it so if i need to clean out the pump for maintenance easier

As far as I'm concerned, yes. I searched on a number of forums and it seems to be a favorite. The only downside to it is that you have to either cut away a little section of the tank's hood to get the stock collection cup to fit or you have to buy a StevieT collection cup so it fits next to the hood.

I just ordered the collection cup last week and it should be here today or tomorrow. I've been breaking in the skimmer in the sump of my 90gal and it's already pulling out a bunch of skimmate.
I also just did the YouTube Tunze 9002 air valve mod which made a tremendous difference in the ease and ability to fine tune the skimmer which was super easy!

The downside is that it only fits in the center chamber so you have to give up your media basket or refugium chamber (depending on what you want to use it for) and you have to cut off the mounting magnet (super easy) to get it to fit in the center chamber. This is all unless you decide to get one of those HOB fuges in which case you can just put the skimmer in there, keep your media basket, and have a fuge.

Just my 2 cents but it's got my vote.

thanks. i've been struggling with finding a way to get water to a sump so i can use my hob remora skimmer a little easier. i was wondering how the unit sits into the middle chamber with that magnet, you answered that one too. only other question: the skimmer looks like it's almost as big as the chamber, water flow isn't an issue?

So i got my nano cube today, little dissapointed because not only did aquacave say on their website that it comes with the protein skimmer and it really dosent, the feeding lid came in with hinges cracked, im not going to send it back because that would be a total pain, i just need to figure out a way to make it work. Anyways I'm thinking about running gfo, could i just run the gfo in the media tray and take out the rings? Im thinking of getting a really fine mesh media bag and putting the gfo in there. Also is gfo a product that can only bought from BRS?

Pain or not, i'd deal with it now before doing anything. I'm sure Aquacave can file a claim with UPS and send you a new hood. Also, if their site says it comes with it, darn it get the skimmer. I know a couple people who won't order from aquacave because of their customer service, hopefully you don't back down...

if you ahve live rock, you don't need the rings. gfo looks like another product i've used, which was nasty btw, for removing phosphate. i just use the granular phosphate remover from i think seachem and put it, plus some activated carbon in seperate mesh bags in the center, with some bonded filter material. havent had any issues yet

I'm with Renogaw on this one, you should really contact AquaCave and see what they can do. I have had nothing but great customer service from them and I'm sure they will make this right for you. If it was a UPS issue, I've heard of vendors just letting you keep the old hood since they get reimbursed by UPS through the shipping insurance. That's not a sure thing at all but a second hood would be nice. Since it's just the feeding lid I'd guess AquaCave could just pop one off of another unit and ship it to you so you're taken care of quickly. You can either email them at CustomerCare@AquaCave.com or call them at 847-775-0640. I've dealt with Enrico in the past and he has been very helpful and friendly.

As far as the GFO goes, how come you plan on running it straight away? Do you plan on doing a lot of feeding or having a really heavy bio load? If your phosphates aren't out of control it seems like you could just do regular PWCs and be good to go.

Anyway, I hope that helps. Good luck with the feeding lid, I'm sure it will be resolved with a simple phone call.

Actually I'm out traveling for more about 10 days. When I get back I'll surely post some pics.

Great, looking forward to it! Thanks.
I see that you have the LED Nano Cube also, do you happen to have tank chronicle of it, I'd love to see how it's doing and how the LEDs affect coral growth as I've only had mine running for a week or two now.
Thanks

I had shipping damage also, foster smith but I believe they are all shipped directly from JBJ
Kept mine and got a credit to make it right

I was planning on running gfo because my nano cube is a downgrade from a 60g which did have some macro algae on the rocks that i did not like at all.

Hi guys,

Thought Id share a pic of my JBJ (or D-D as they are known in the UK) 28g HQI nano.

SANY0477resized.jpg

I run my tank pretty much standard. I have upgraded the skimmer to a Deltec MCE300, added extra flow with a koralia nano 1600lph and only run floss and carbon in my media basket. I dose 1ml per day of Red Sea No3:Po4-X which is an active carbon source keeping my nitrates and phosphates on 0.

Stock:

Fish: Pair of oceallaris clowns, royal gramma, purple firefish, aurora goby with tiger pistol, yellow clown goby

Inverts: Red legged hermits, halloween hermit, brittle star, purple urchin, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, various snails. I also have a RBTA and a maxi mini (carpet) nem.

Corals: Mixture of SPS, LPS and softies.

I have started a thread if anyone wants to find out more :wavehand:

beautiful :) you don't have dead spots with your rock/corals right up next to the glass? do you have cleaning issues?

Have one small dead spot in the bottom right hand side - you can see a bit of green cyano (next to the feather duster). When the zoas on the left hand side are fully expanded the grow out to the glass like that but the rock is about an inch away. No cleaning issues really... there are some tight spots but nothing an algae scraper wont reach.

I am getting a new halide lamp delivered tomorrow. A new marine lux product that is 12,000k, full spectrum that is meant to be very white so hoping to get some good photos over the weekend. I will post them on my thread.

Thank you for your kind words

I called aquacave the day i received it, they said that they were gonna call jbj because the description on their website came straight from them, and then i was thinking to myself "oh here we go, they are gonna claim nothing was their fault and put it all on jbj" and they were gonna call me back tomorrow, thinking to myself again "yeah right, better save this phone number cause i will be calling them tomorrow." I even went as far as to take screenshots of their description as proof. Well to my surprise the next day in the afternoon i got a phone call from mike, telling me that he talked with jbj and they stopped including protein skimmers 2 years ago, (here i am getting ready for a fight.) Then he says, "but thats no fault of your own, so what we are gonna do is send you a new protein skimmer. And for your hood all we can offer is an exchange, but that may be more trouble than its worth because you can do a warranty claim with jbj and they will sent out a new hood as I spoke with them today."

i have been searching youtube for 28g nano cubes for scaping ideas, and im disgusted with the ammount of tangs/foxfish i have seen in them.

I'm really glad to hear AquaCave is going to take care of you and didn't make a liar out of me. :) They really are a decent outfit and I'm going to be giving them all the business I can because of how they've taken care of me.
I totally agree with you solastsummer, putting tangs and other large fish in these 28s is just plain wrong. I had a guy at one of my LFS suggest a foxface to me after I told him I was looking to stock my wife's 24g Aquapod. A foxface in a 24! That's crazy. Considering the rear chamber on these AIOs and the LR and LS, there's probably about 15 gallons of water volume in my wife's Aquapod. Oh, sorry for the rant, it's just so cruel.
