JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Can someone tell me how to cut this magnet off of the side of my Tunze 9002 skimmer!!!!!! Ive been at it for an hour and im desperate for help here. Im using a master compass saw.

A dremel tool is your best bet. There is a thin black plastic around the base of the magnet that attaches it to the body (it looks like black caulking)

Kevin, I hope you don't mind that I quoted your PM to me publicly but I'd like to share the answer with everyone in case there are others with the the same question.

Here are some pics:

I used a dremel tool to cut around it being careful not to cut the body of the skimmer but rather the edge of the magnet casing. If you don't have a dremel, a hack saw blade or coping saw should do the trick just fine.

I then used a screw driver to gently pry between the magnet and the body in order to break the glue between the two. It fairly easily and very cleanly separated the magnet from the body as I worked my way around the magnet.

And finally the finished product, the magnet separated from the body. The body of the skimmer wasn't damaged at all and all of the glue came right off with the magnet. This took about 15 minutes total as I was going slowly in order not to damage the skimmer.

The key is to not attempt to cut all the way through the magnet. You shouldn't need to cut the magnet at all. You're just cutting through the plastic surrounding the magnet as the magnet itself is not glued down. If you can cut just past the plastic adhesive then use a screw driver with a twisting motion to separate the magnet from the body gently it will come right off. I hope this helps and if any clarification is needed, please just let me know.
 
Thank you so much for posting this and i dont mind at all. I did finally get it off with this technique. This is great advice to anyone looking to add the Tunze 9002.

I have it running now and dont see any foam yet. I loosened the screw but no foam seems to be rising up into the cup yet. Ill give it time to break it.
 
Hey Kevin, glad it worked out for you. That's great.
My 9002 took a few days to really break in and pull a lot of skimmate. I also left the blue air adjustment screw out all the way while it was breaking in, just give it a day or so.
You may also consider doing the following mod:

It replaces the blue air adjustment screw with an external one that is much more accurate and more easily accessible. You'll be surprised at the benefit.

As far as skimmate goes, after having done the above mod, in about 3 days time I got this:

I have now picked up a StevieT skinny skimmer cup and I'm currently breaking that cup in and already have a little skimmate in that cup. I'm planning on putting the skimmer in the 28 tomorrow. For now it's just in the sump of my 90 gallon just because I've been breaking it in, cutting off the magnet, waiting for the new skinny skimmer cup etc...

I just posted these pics on my 28 LED Nano Cube chronicle on a different reef forum that I also visit. I thought I'd post them here also to share with my fellow 28 Nano Club members.

I'd love some feedback on your opinions of my bioload. I'm considering adding one more fish, a little green clown goby which should have a relatively small footprint but still, I'd love some opinions.

Here's the star of my tank in my opinion, it's my Bluespot Jawfish. I'm thinking of putting another inch of sand in the tank for him but he seem pretty happy as is so it's still up for debate.

Next up is my Yellow Assessor, it took me forever to get my hands on one of these guys a few years ago but now I've seen them a few times in my LFS.

And here's my paired Ocellaris Clowns, they are my oldest fish as I've had them for around 3-4 years.

And finally, my little green banded goby. Tiny little guy but he's quite active.

My thought was that you'd typically want no more than 4-5 fish in one of these 28 gallon tanks but i'm considering the size of these fish as well. The clowns are fairly small, the assessor is quite small, the green banded goby is tiny, and the BSJF is the only fairly good sized fish in the tank. What are your thoughts?

Your tank looks awesome! Really like the fish choices! I do already have the skinny cup. Glad i did so. I will def give it a couple of days to break in. I was also looking into that mod! Thanks for everything.
 
so, i'm working in my tank, and i notice that the water is a little cold. the chiller says 82, but is still running, and the heater shows it needs to run. the little LED thermometer shows 73, but i haven't really paid much attention to it due to the chiller showing the temp...so i went and grabbed one of those corallife tank thermometers and it reeds 71...holy crap.

unplugged the chiller and flushed it backwards with vinegar/water solution, and about 15 asterinas came out of it. BLEH, the buggers get everywhere! flushing the chiller with fresh water to get the vinegar out, but i can't believe the chiller was off by 10 degrees. now, i'm hoping the chiller just needed cleaning and i don't need to buy a new one.
 
I have the LED version and would like to add actinic lighting to it. I know some people run the dawn/dusk lights for this, but I have also read where they burn out b/c they were never intended to do this. I also saw that JBJ has changed that and offering a kit? Can anyone confirm that. If this isn't true, I was wondering about adding a few more LEDs for the actinic...anyone have a suggestion
 
Interesting question. I just assumed that they dawn/dusk lights were actinics. They certainly perform the function. They really make my corals pop! I have read that some people have had them burn out but they just contacted JBJ who sent them 4 new dawn/dusk LEDs with larger heat sinks that were easy to change out and this solved the problem. My plan is to just keep running them and if they go out I'll get the upgraded heat sink ones from JBJ (hopefully for free).
How long have you had your LED 28 Nano? Have you been running the dawn/dusk lights as actinics?
 
I've had mine running for about a month now. I don't run them all day, but I think I'll start and try the replacement thing if they burn out. Anyone else have experience w/ this?
 
I had a question on another board today, thought I would post here. What HOB skimmers are there that run their pump inside the tank (not in external housing)? Which have their return piped directly into the tank (ie: not using an overflow). I'm looking for skimmers with the least noise possible.

My only response was the Eshopps 75 HOB. Any other thoughts?

Funny, was just thinking the same thing. Wondering if future JBJ LED setups will combine more blue lights in their main LED array. Its almost like the full LED's are too white with the dusk/dawn too blue?

I have the ushio 14k bulb in mine and it works great for me. Very early stocking stages and no sps to speak of, but so far so good. I had an issue for about a week where my ballast wouldnt fire it up, but havent had a problem in the last month or so.
