Jebao wp-25 gph in a nano

Hello all,

I have a general question that I felt was better suited for this forum over the nano section. I have set up a 14 gallon biocube with the intentions of trying to keep SPS corals exclusively. A choice needs to be made as far as supplementing the flow up to appropriate levels.

I was researching the Jebao WP-25, to circumvent the cost of a Vortech MP10. According to the product page on Amazon, the lowest strength setting on the Jebao is 3200 liters, or roughly 850 gallons per hour. I had guessed I would not need this strong of a current to keep the corals happy, but that strong makes me concerned my tank would not become a snowglobe.

As I can not make a decision based on my experience, what do you all think? Too much or still within the ideal range?

Thank you for reading

That's a lot of pump for a small tank. Any sand and it'll be all over the place. I have one...just one in my 60g which is 48 x 15 x 17 and it's even on a dimmer. I have a mixed reef w SPS. But for all SPS and bare bottom it wouldn't be bad at all

I do have sand in the tank. I think I remember reading something recommending somewhere ballpark of 500ish gallons per hour being suggested for SPS (and even that sounds like an awful lot in this size a tank). Are there any other alternative powerheads that I am not considering, which could fit? A Koralia may be the key. I believe the stock return provides ~120 gph.

Ya you'll def need more flow than stock. Get a wp25 put it on a dimmer on low and set it to else and you'll be golden. But again the sand could be an issue. Point the pump at the water level to help

A dimmer meaning some controller other than the one it comes with to restrict the output further?

Yup! If you set it to "else" mode it'll go through full power to least power in a natural cycle. You can also use the W1 "pulse" mode. This setting you can adjust the power from 100% - 75% - 50% and the length of the pulse. But if you have it set to "else" on a dimmer set on low, them you'll be good to go

Ok I think I understand, though I have no clue where to begin researching dimmers. Is there a popular brand or model people are happy with?

lol ya just go to your local Home Depot and pick one up for like $5. In the lighting isle ask if needed. :D

Oh use a dimmer switch like that? It's possible to control the output with that? I would have never guessed. I was picturing another controller box

Spend the extra money and get an MP10, much better choice for that tank size IMO. Smaller in tank footprint and better flow, I'm currently using a WP25 in my 58 and have to say they are great at moving water but no ideal for a nano. I hear they are comming out with a WP10 or something soon, might be worth looking into.

I put a wp25 in my JBJ 30 RL and had water flowing over the glass. I installed a power reducer and brought it down to 12V and placed the controller at the lowest setting (25% I believe). Only this way is it possible to keep in there. I would not suggest putting one in a smaller tank.

Get an mp10, lol. I have a bc14 and it's perfect. I run it around 60% on reefcrest. The wp25 is just too big and the in tank size will be too distracting.

Somehow I never thought to look at the size of the head while goin through all of this. I agree the MP10 would look better, and not be nearly as risky as trying to fit the WP25. I suppose the best route would be to try and find a used MP10.

Thank you for the input all.

I have an MP10 on my 29g Biocube. I run it full tilt. Since ive added it to my tank coral growth has exploded.
