Jellyfish

So I go to my LFS the other day like I do every week and my daughter spots a tank up at the front with jellyfish and falls in love. She wants me to set up a jellyfish tank for her room. I have plenty of experience with saltwater fish and corals but have never looked in to or considered jellyfish?? Really??? The employee did tell me that they were rather difficult to keep in captivity. Can anybody share their experience with me on this topic? Or is this one of those where you rush your kids along and say "œmaybe next time". lol

There is also a book by Chad Widmer, "How to keep jellyfish in aquariums". I haven´t read it yet, though.

From what I read so far on the web, though, they require massive-sized aquaria, special food, tanks with no corners, etc. etc. so basically it´s too much fuss for a "normal" home aquarium - if you want to provide conditions that keep the jellies happy, that is.

However, there is one species I might consider, Cassiopeia andromeda, or "upside down jelly", it lives in the mangroves and basically just sits on the floor and wobbles (it does not swim); if I had to pick a species for keeping at home, it would therefore be this one, as confining a pretty much sessile animal to a comparatively small space feels less bad to me.
I once saw some girl´s tank on youtube who keeps them successfully, but I don´t remember her username.

Do you happen to know what species they keep at this pet store?

If it turns out to be like this (which I am familiar with lol) you could always tell her that it is not good for jellies to be kept in tanks or something along those lines. But tell her you could get upside down jellies. They don't swim in water like reg jellies, but its still a jelly!
I guess it depends on how young she is too. You could always convince her that Nemo needs a new home and you've been asked to help! lol

She is 9 years old and a really good girl. Obviously I didn’t purchase anything but I did want to look in to it since it wasn’t anything I had ever considered in the past and didn’t really know much about. Now I’m curious, if not I guess I can always call on Captain Nemo to the rescue!

yes in order to properly keep jelly fish you need an aquarium called a "kriesel"

mr.r8rfan I hear you on that about kids, as parents we try to always make them happy no matter what it takes. All 4 of my kids have their own Fresh water aquarium. And I have 3 Freshwater and 1 Marine. My oldest son, soon to be 15 wants piranhas. So we will see on that lol.

I second the "upside down jellyfish" I had one for a while until he got stuck in the overflow and died. My lfs has them from time to time. I think flow should be looked into as it didn't like to be blown around either.

I used to work at a Marine shop. We tried the upside down jellies. They take a considerable amount of work for a jelly that just sits on the bottom and pulses. Add to that their high cost and short life span and it doesn't seem worth it. We did it once for a display, and never again.
