joculator angelfish

hey guys does anybody know what size these fish grow to? recommended tank size? Reasonable price range? Will they do ok on their own or will they need to be kept in a pair?

3-4 inches tops. Bigger tank the better, but can go in any tank that could house a dwarf angel. Definitely going to pay more than $500 or more for one unless you find a deal. Not sure on the pairing or not.

They love being able to swim in the open, and in and out of the rocks.
I'm sure one would do fine, but they definately enjoy being with each other.

I've owned mine for almost 3 yrs now and they are like a couple of kids playing all day.

I would think you would expect to pay 6 to 9 hundred a peice for them.

Nice shot Brad!

I got my trio in August of 2007, over four years ago now... I tracked down the collector in Cocos Keeling and we ended up bringing in twenty of these through my local shop. I kept the three smallest... this was inch back then...

And the little trio...

I also then acquired the one and only joculator captive raised by Frank Baensch of RCT in Hawaii... who became the male of the harem...

In less than a year they were grown and spawning...

An excellent species collected well that will grow to three to four inches... they will do fine alone but come on... Centropyge is a social genus!!

haha thanks copps What is a reasonable price for this fish? some say 7-1000 others seems to say thats way too much.

I know the pricing on this fish throughout its chain of custody and that is a perfectly reasonable price to pay. Who says its way too much and what is their rational?

There is still just the one collector in Cocos of these fish... were it not for him and his very interesting circumstances this fish would have a similar story to other relatively shallow water dwarf angelfish species with restricted ranges like Centropyge nahackyi, C. hotumatua, or C. resplendens... and would be unseen in the industry...

Well reading various threads about this fish some people seem to say 500 others say 7. It is an amazing angel, thats for sure. Do you know how many approx. are exported each year?

That's a heck of a shot Brad......and I thought I had a huge euphyllia! I remember a time when the topic of conversation in reef aquaria was that you couldn't mix LPS and SPS in the same tank LOL.

As for C. Joculator: what a stunning fish. I love the collection back-stories Copps alwys provides--really something how these little guys live in our tanks being tens of thousand of miles from their home.

Thanks. It's fast becoming a huge passion of mine. Taking pictures of my fish.
My hammer was big back when I took that picture, but now it's huge. I can barely get my algea magnet cleaner through without taking polyps off.
A couple more pics of mine.

Brad, I had to resurrect this thread as your tank is stunning. Do you still have that hammer? If it was bigger than the pictures in this thread in 2011, how big is it now? Would love to see some pictures of it if you don't mind sharing.

Those Joculator's are beautiful fish!
