Just went there on a recent trip to Florida. The weather was kinda chilly, and mom doesn't swim, so I took the folks on a glass bottom boat ride. I thought it would be lots of turquoise shadows and shapes. Heck, it was like looking into an aquarium! Tangs, wrasses, angelfish, gorgonians galore! Even saw the famous elkhorn coral. Very cool stuff!
The aquariums at the visitor center were pretty good too. The biggest pealy jawfish and argi angel I have ever seen. Acropora and gorgonians growing well. But their man display...ugh, every fish had the WORST HLLE I've ever seen. They all looked like they were wearing white masks
Anyways, even if you don't get in the water, I recommend you guys check out the park. It's worth it, and you can still see the reef like we did (also a nice break in the drive to Key West).
