Hey Jeremy ---

As you know I'm also looking to upgrade to a 180.
I have 2 choices ---

First --- I could get one, with a Starphire front panel, at a local aquarium store for $1000.00. The only problem would be the overflows (Pre-filter) boxes would have to be glass, not plastic. The owner says that the silicone would not adhere to both the glass tank and the plastic overflows. They said it would peel right off. Is that possible?

Second --- A 180 without the Starphire front panel for $750.00. Do you think the Starphire front panel is worth a $250.00 difference?

Is the front panel on your tank Starphire or Standard Glass?

Do you find it difficult to reach the ball valves on the manifold where they are located?

I'm asking you these questions because I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before I begin my upgrade.

As you know Mike will be working with me on the manifold design, but my set-up is going to be a little different than yours.

Thanks for your advise ---
Chris

chris -

i just went through this decision and opted against the starphire, although I was being quoted prices higher than yours for an oceanic 180. I ended up with a RR AGA 180 instead. I figured the saved $$ could be put into powerheads, return pumps or lighting.

Hey Mario ---

Thanks for the advice. The $750.00 tank is made by Perfecto, are they a reputable company?

What is RR AGA? I apologize for my ignorance.

Thanks ---
Chris

yankee26th,

Yes, Perfecto is a good tank.

RR stands for Reef Ready (drilled with an overflow) which is good!

AGA stands for All Glass Aquarium Company (makers of aquariums), another good company.

Thanks Dennis ---

I think $750.00 for a RR with 2 overflow boxes, each box with 2 holes and 2 Durso's one in each overflow box, is a good deal?

Chris

yankee26th,

That deal is okay. But when I upgrade to a 180 or bigger in the future, I plan on finding a second-hand setup. Let someone else take the big hit. There have to be some good deals in Florida. Just keep your eyes open! Best of luck! Let's give JR his thread back now.

Starphire is a luxury and not a necessity. If I had the money I would do it. But I didn't when I set up my tank and is the reason I purchased used. It really is personal preference. Does starphire make a difference in viewing clarity? absolutely. Will it make a difference in your inhabitants? Not one bit.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a used 180 anywhere in my area, so I will probably have to go with a new one. The money I save on not getting the Starphire front panel I can use towards the Reeflo Dart Gold pump I want.

Do you find it difficult to reach the ball valves on the manifold where they are located?

Thanks ---
Chris

What is the "rule of thumb" when referring to the holes at the bottom of the overflow boxes. Drain to the sump is 1" and the returns to the main tank is 1.5"?
