Introduction

My first tank was fresh water one I started it up in 2007, but got bored very fast. One day I saw 2 g pico reef, and I was smashed with colors and shapes, that day I decided to start my own nano reef. I spend lots of time on finding information about reef keeping, finally decided to start one up to get some experience.

In 2008 I started my first 7 g pico reef, it was nice colorful mixed reef tank, but I ran out of space in tank very fast, so half year later I doubled size of tank to 17 g nano reef. Somewhere between those two tanks I bought first nps coral "“ swiftia exsera, and totally loved it. Soon after tahat decided to have only nps corals.

In 2009 I planned bigger tank, and in February 2010 I've set it up.

System Profile

Aquarium: 60x50x45 cm ~ 135 l (24'x20'x18' 35g)
Sump: 45x45x40 cm (18'x18'x16', water amount is approx. 15g)
Skimmer: Deltec APF600; AquaEl 650 l/h
Lighting: 1x24w ATI AquaBlue Special
Circulation: Koralia 2; Koralia nano
Return pump: New Jet 3000
Heater: AquaEl 200 W
Reactor with Bio Pellets started on 26-06-2010

Filtration

Because there is a lot of food in water I based my filtration on oversized skimmer, also there is about 18 kg (39 lbs) of Live Rock and 9 kg (18 lbs) of Live Sand. Every week I do 10-15 % water change, there is a problem with water changes "“ NPS tanks need them but if you change to much you can stress corals, so 15 % weekly is maximum.
Recently I started using Bio Pellets in diy Fluidised reactor to reduce Nitrates level.

Lighting

Because NPS corals doesn't require any light to grow, so we can say that light is just for me. There is only 1x24 W diy lamp in my aquarium with ATI Aqua Blue Special bulb. 12 hours photo period starts at 10:00.

Water Parameters

When I ran out of my tests more than year ago I just stopped to measure parameters. There is one nice thing in NPS corals "“ you don't have to dose anything, just stay with water change every week and parameters should be all right.

The only thing which I measure every few days is specific gravity (1,024), Nitrate (right now approx. 35) and temperature (approx. 25*C).
I don't need to know if Ca, Mg, etc is all right "“ all my corals are fine so there is no point in measuring everything.

Feeding

Fun part.
I'm still feeding manually, there are some plans to automate it but at these moment I don't need that.
Main "œdiet" is frozen food. To make things much more easy once in two weeks time I'm preparing mix food. Mix from: Invertebrate foods; Red plankton; Green plankton; Micro plankton; Mix sea eggs; Rotifers etc.

Feeding regimen:
* Mix of frozen foods 1 "“ 3 times a day.
* Mix of Mysis and Rotifers (relation 2,5 : 1) for lps corals every night.
* Mix of dry foods (FM Ultra Pac; FM Ultra Calm; FM Ultra Seafan; FM Min F; Preis Coral Energizer; PhytoPlan) 1 "“ 3 times a week.

I thought the restrictions on being qualified as a Nano are 34 gallons and Under?

If you mesure my tank by dimensions it will be 35 g
But water amount is approximately 31 g

Everything from my 17g tank is in these tank so we can say that 50 % of that tank is 1,5 year old :)

...

anyway thanks everyone for nice words :)

Just for future reference, posting, voting ect.

We go by outside tank dimensions for volume so 24x20x18 would actually be considered a 37 gallon tank. It does not matter what kind of obstructions are in the aquarium, how far you fill it up or how large the sump is.
