June 24th GIRS Auction Rules

I am going to try and explain how the auction will take place.

We will start a separate thread stating what everyone has they are going to bring. Pictures would be great but if not no big deal. Along with what you are going to bring you want to state the least amount of money you are willing to take for that coral. For example...I am bringing a frag of green candy coral and I want a minimum of $5.00. So the bidding will begin at $5.00.

Once you walk in the door you will be given a bidding number. We will have a program going and have someone keeping track of who sold the coral and who bought the coral. Then at the end of the day if you sold more than you bought you will get money back and if you did not you will owe. Since this is a club funding event 20% of everything sold will be donated to GIRS. The program we have will keep a running total of all this so the "check-out" process will be very smooth!

While the bidding is going on the seller will bring their corals up to the front with the auctioneer. That way the seller can explain what the coral is and the care it needs.

When you receive our bidding number you will also receive a disclaimer sheet. This sheet will state that GIRS is in no way responsible for the condition of the coral or if the coral is disease free. The buyer is responsible....blah blah blah...

If anyone has any questions please post them here and leave the thread for the corals that everyone is bringing just for that.

Thanks,
Bob

I forgot to add that only GIRS members are allowed to sell on the day of the auction but we welcome anyone to come to purchase.

20%??? What happened to 50%???

The club has money now. At the last auctions the club was broke and we needed the money to bring in speakers and such. We need money to run but we do not want to take it from everyone when we don't need it. If you want to give more we will gladly accept it.

We are also working on getting businesses to donate item for us to raffle off right now. I think Oceans Motions is donating a gift Certificate along with a few others. We make money that way too.

We are going to start the auction PROMPTLY at 1pm. So it would be a good idea to come a little early so you can take a look at some things and get a bidding # too. Please do not come much before noon though as I may still be setting up .

After the auction we will grill burgers and dogs and enjoy the rest of the afternoon

Will the auction be verbal or silent?

Auctions conducted by the Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association are verbal. 2-3 people from the club act as auctioneers, with runners that bring up items for bid and move sold items to the buyer. They even have an option the costs $1.00 (goes to the club) where a buyer can call up an interested item to be auctioned next in line (in case a buyer needs to leave early).

Jeff

I really did not explain very well. It will be a verbal auction. We will have an "auctioneer" and they will start with the minimum bid the seller will take. So if the minimum bid is taken the coral will be sold.

I will run that idea of the $$$$ option to bump a coral or person selling the coral pass the Board to see what they all think and get back to you.

about what time will the auction get over I have to be to work @ 4:00 ( have to smack a few drunks around lol) and bullet could you post directions or address plz

I cannot say for sure because it depends on how many people show up. I would guess a few hours. I will get some directions. I need to figure out how to do it so that everyone knows where they can park.

Hey Jeff. I ran this by the board and everyone agrees this is a great idea. How we have decided to do this we are going to print out tickets that can be purchased for $3.00 each. With this ticket you will be able to "bump" any one coral up in line if you do not want to wait for it's turn.

Like Jeff mentioned, maybe we should have one or two people dedicated to bringing the corals up to the front for sale. That might keep things moving faster rather than waiting for each person to bring their own coral up there. We can have each person just fill out a description notecard for each coral they will sell.

Yeah...we will have a few people helping out. One will just be keeping track of who is selling...to who....and how much. Another will be doing the actual auctioning, and we will have others helping stage items to keep things going fast. The seller can also be standing up there to briefly describe the coral and answer any questions.

Another idea for the auction is to have a table for dutch auctions for items that don't sell for much or if people have many of one item to sell. Good for stuff like xenia, mushrooms, chaeto, snails etc. It will keep the auction moving.

You could just use a signup sheet for each item similar to last year's silent auction.
