June Frag Swap

I would be willing to host Junes frag swap. I have the room, lots of parking, and I have a BBQ grill, and I can cook on it! Only problem is, I do not have a tank sufficent enough to display the frags other than my 55g reef. If I can come across something cheap enough, like a couple 40g breeders, that end of it will also be covered. But without something to put the frags in, it would be kind of useless.. So, I will be searching for a couple tanks, and if I find some, I will let everyone know. I'm sure there are some other people interested in hosting, but I though I would step up and volounteer. Would the frag display tanks need to be cycled? or just use new SW, kinda like a QT tank? I am also working on getting some high bay MH fixtures so light will not be an issue.

All you need to get is a couple rubbermaid tub's from Wallie World, don't waste money on tanks, plus rubbermaids are always good to have around, and you can see corals from the top better anyway.

I can also rob the skilter off of my 55g. I have that 20g tank still too... (didnt forget about you Hambandit) and still have 6 of those heaters. I even have a PC setup that fits the 20.... I have a 45g sterilite I got when I was moving to the 55g tank.. I used to have a 55g acrylic with a divider in it too that would work great if the guy still has it, and would let me borrow it. Ok, back to the other question though.. Do the frag tanks need to be cycled? or just use new SW? And how much tank space do the frag swaps usually take? and wouldnt it also be a good idea to run carbon due to introducing some stressed corals? It looks like I can round up enough stuff to make this work! Thanks for the offers guys. BTW, Hanbandit, you may have to wait till after the frag swap to get the 20g.. I also have a 10g... and could get a few more 10g's... It looks like the only thing I may not have is a 400w Mogul MH bulb. I will set up a high bay 400w MH fixture I can borrow from work... But the bulbs we run are only 6500k... so I will need a bulb in the higher end of the spectrum. But all in all, I can make the frag swap work here... June 3rd would work better for me though.. I am off sundays... I would love to open my house to a club event. (even though I have not joined yet) lol.. This sound good to everyone?

nice project man, no worries about getting me that 20 later. its not a big rush on my part. i dont have an overflow or a return pump yet anyways

bump! Do the frag tanks need to be cycled? or do we do it like a QT tank, and monitor ammonia and do WC's accordingly? Thanks

I am no expert, but you can't go wrong with having a cycled tank set-up. Use some water out of your current tank.

I would just pull a big waterchange out of your system and get about half of the system volume for the frag swap tank and just use new water for the other half. Just get good flow and the temp right and you should have no problem. Lighting will not be an issue for 1 day except for asthetics. Unless you are going to let people bring the frags over early I would just use pc's.

Just got a H.O.T. Magnum cannister filter at Matts. It will work great for the 20g frag tank. I have installed it on my display tank so it will get cycled. Doing this should help when we load the 20 with frags. The 20g will have 65wX2 pc on it that I am gonna steal off of my daughters tank. I am going to drill the new acrylic ends on the 40, and put a closed loop on it, with a cannister filter. I have an ez-up pool I am going to steal the filter from (basically the same thing as the HOT magnum) that I think will work well.. I talked to Matt, and he thinks the 40, and 20 will be enough. So, all I have to do is figure how to light the 40 and we are in business.... I am still thinking the 400w MH, but I will have to hang it high above the tank.. Or use Josh's PC's.. either way, we have everything covered... Oh, BTW,.. its BYOB for those who wish to drink. I am thinking Dogs & Burgers which I will supply... sound good?

Your 20g looks good .
Dogs and Burgers sounds good. We'll grab a few of 2 liters of soda, cups, and ice. Probably a bag of chips too.

pm sent.
