i probably missed the announcement on this one, but what is the topic/speaker/etc going to be at june's meeting?

the more of you guys i meet in person the more i want to go to the meetings. i just want to say that everyone has been very, very kind and helpful!

May - Water Testing Forum
This forum/workshop will be led by Rich Van Dusen & myself. Bring your tank water, and even your makeup water if you want it tested. We will have a large collection of various test kits, digital readers, and so on. We will look at the discrepancies between the kits, and I think some of you will be surprised to find out how accurate that $15 test kit you picked up a Petco really is. If you have a swing arm hydrometer it will give you a chance to calibrate it against a refractometer. This should be a very informative meeting, hands-on type meeting.


June - Dr. Frank Marini (Fish Breeding)
Frank Marini was born and raised in Hudson Mass. After high school he joined the Army and moved to Ft. Benning GA to complete his Military education. Four years later he returned to Massachusetts to attend and complete college. In 1989 he moved to Houston TX to begin his graduate training in Molecular Biology at the University of Texas.

From the start, fish, and fish tanks have always intrigued me. My parents setup my first tank, a 30gal metal-framed glass box containing seahorses when I was 12, I was hooked from that day on. Since then, I've kept a number of different fish and have always focused on predatory and unusual fish. I started my first reef tank in 1986, and my first large fish only in 1989. I fell hard for the banggai cardinal fish in 1995, and after solving the mating issues had multiple successful breedings. I have been credited with having the first reported breeding of these fish and successfully raising the fry. In 1997, I scaled up my banggai production and was able to supply over 300 banggai fry to local Houston pet stores. I continued banggai breeding for a few years thereafter, but again have refocused on predatory fish (mainly the scorpionfish family: lionfish, etc).

For the past years I've been a vocal proponent of keeping Fish Only tanks and expounding the merits of keeping large visually stunning fish. I've had the opportunity to breed a number of ornamental fish and in collaboration with Martin Moe wrote a series of articles on fish breeding for the home hobbyist in the online publication Advanced Aquarist. I currently moderate one of the largest forums on home ornamental breeding called The Fish Breeding Forum at www.Reefcentral.com, and frequently contribute to topics in both reef fish and Aggressive fish forums. I am also moderate the new Marine Fish - Reproduction, Care and Husbandry forum as part of Team Marine Depot at www.MarineDepot.com/forums.

For any members interested in breeding Bangaii Cardinals (or those who have already bred them), Frank Marini will be our guest speaker for the month of June. For many years Frank has been publishing valuable info on breeding and raising marine ornamentals, primarily the Bangaii Cardinals. He's also the moderator here at Reef Central on the FISH BREEDING FORUM. June's meeting starts at 7:00, Friday the 16th. We're at the Roundtable Pizza, 9500 Greenback Lane, Folsom CA 95630 (actually closer to the Madison Ave. side of the shoping center) near ACE Hardware.
