June meeting

I have an idea for a topic...how about "what the hell is wrong with dana's tank." SPS just don't seem to like it. i've killed a baby bird's nest, and i've had a stylophora in there for a good while, but its polyps are starting to lose color or disappear, and the willasay (sp?) has lost color along with a couple tiny acro frags. i've tried moving stuff around, more light, and less light, more flow, less flow, etc. all my numbers seem to be good. no nitrates or nitrites, calcium is good, ph is good, etc. i have three 400w 20K lights.

i don't feed very the zooplex stuff very often, could that be it? maybe twice a month. i do cyclopeze maybe twice a month too...

i'm an expert at growing that damned black cyanobacteria tho!

think i need help! :(

Thats a good topic... :) Sorry to hear that your tank isn't doing well... How's your macro algae doing in the refugium??? How about the milleporas you got??? Are they still going??? What are you testing for???

howdy randy. the tank is actually doing pretty well, all the softies and fish and inverts are doing great, its just the sps i seem to be having trouble with. those two millies i got are still kicking, but the colors aren't as bright as i think they're supposed to be. i have them pretty high up in the tank.

the macro is looking healthy, but its not growing like i know it can...but then again, my urchin got demoted to the fuge and he's a hog. the mangroves are growing really REALLY well.

i've tested nitrates and ites, ammonia, ph, alk, calcium, iodine, phosphates...i think that's it. but everything looks good. is it possible my bulbs are too old? maybe the 400w isn't really 400w? i bought them used. the guy said they were only a couple months old, but i'm not sure. is there a way to tell? thanks!

If it's any consolation Dana, I couldn't keep a birdsnest alive to save my life. I could keep all kinds of other corals with great success but never that one.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. How do you supplement calcium and alk? What are your levels that you have tested? I doubt it has anything to do with feeding as most of us that keep SPS don't feed our corals at all.

Should be the 21st

Yup... Its the weekend after the swap... :)

I'd like to try and get a head count of who all will be there...

We'll be handing the reins to the new BOD and going over Dana's tank, as well as discussing the success of the swap...

I know the new BOD will be there, but who else???

I'll be bringing a couple of beverages...

And I think we're having hotdogs and hamburgers... :)

Won't be there, gotta do some redneck Bobcat landscaping :) If you've got cyano, you probably have insufficient flow or something leaching nitrates/phosphates. The willisae is not the easiest coral in the world to maintain color on. I run with it under Radium bulbs and found this gives the best color. Definately a 20k-lovin' coral. With 400 W bulbs on a 180 you should have plenty of light, but the ballasts can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good meeting!

sorry, its been a crazy couple days with father's day and work and all...

anyway, for test kits, we have Salifert's phosphate and iodine tests, a red sea calcium, a tropic marine alk test, and just the basic api test for ammonia, etc. everytime i test, everything comes back good.

i'm thinking 1p for the meeting time...that way everybody will be hungry and will eat up all these left over dogs and burgers! if you wanna come early, that's fine too. don't bring cokes/diet cokes or water, there's plenty left. if you wanna bring something picnicy like cole slaw or potato salad, etc. that'd be great. i'm probably going to make some stuffed jalapenos since i have the oven this time. yum. they go great with beer. :)

dave, we have mushrooms, rics, a bunch of kenya trees that came on the rock, frog spawn, grape coral, torch, bubble, lobo, gsp, devils finger leather, some other leather, zenia, a bunch of zoas and some polys, pagoda cup, duncan, and stynophora (for some reason its doing well). are you going to get to come?? that'd be great!

other dave :), i've been wondering about the flow too. i rearranged the rocks about a month ago, and haven't had the cyano back, so i'm hoping that fixed it, but i'm not sure, the same spot is starting to look a little brown. its a 240g, with about another hundred gallons downstairs in the fuge/sump. i can't see the numbers on the pump, but i'm thinking its a 2800 that returns to six pretty equally spaced returns (we have a spare 3600 if we need to use it). there are four koralia heads, two 4s a 3, and a 2. the lights are three 400w, 20k bulbs. there are actinics, but i only use them for the dusk/dawn action. how do you tell when its time to change the bulbs? is there some sort of light meter or something? i bought the light and bulbs used, so i don't know how old they are, tho when i bought them he said they were only a couple months old.

Do you want me to bring cheese dip again? I think it's my standard meeting food now, since I've taken over the reigns from Chase. I promise to only make one batch! well...unless you want me to make two.

Seriously? The website hasn't been updated for directions/who's house it's at since MARCH???

Also, can you send me your address Dana? I like to navigate there and since the website doesn't have it listed (grrrr) will you send it to me? Thanks.

howdy...the address is 2800 Kelly Lane in Kodak (tho we're really more straw plains than kodak) 933/1643 in case you get lost. You can bring whatever you like. I have no idea how many people are coming, or who is bringing what. all i know is we have plenty of burgers and dogs! and i'm making stuffed jalapenos...

c'yall tomorrow!

I thought that I had read the directions. I just talked myself out of it before I looked somewhere else. Or maybe, I was too lazy to look, no too busy, that's it too busy, to look somewhere else.

See U Saturday.
