just a quick question about cannister filters

sorry I am new to refugiums, or maybe just retarded lol. if the water comes in wont it just overflow everywhere bbefore it goes out the top? idk im not grasping it lol

Here's a picture of my DIY refugium:

In this photo I have a hole that is higher than the other (with protein skimmer), so it just flows through (Physics) into the last container that has the pump. You have to make sure the first hole is higher than the last for it to flow or you'll need a pump to make it flow.

Also here's a thread on refugium flow: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=462212

Hope this helps.

OH no no no no I mean the return pump, like a refugium only no sump, no skimmer just a tank with macro and a little sand. no skimmer yet

Well I do believe it would still be the same Playa0069u. The way I understand the refugium. If I took my first container out (Water coming in) and moved the plumping into the second container (refugium area). Removed the last container (return) and moved it into the refugium container (which is not a good idea) very bad for the pump. I would still have to provide proper movement from the refugium to the tank. The turn over requirements would still be the same - at least that is what I believe. Otherwise you will have all kinds of problems with algae in your tank (cyano along with others). If you have a one inch pvc without any elbow, tee etc the flow is 600 gph, you need a pump to move it back into your tank or yes it will over flow. your pump MUST match your input - that would be critical and if the pump every failed the refugium area must be large enough to handle the tanks lowest point.

Sorry I didn't make myself clearer. I have seperate compartments, input area, refugium area and then the return. Only the return area has a pump on my 75G. Hope that's clearer - LOL

yup. Im gonna sell the can after the tanks is full. ntil then i am using it to pull out the crap when i fill it all the way up.

Thanks Playa0069u, I put alot of live rock in knowing that I would be taking some out for my 29g. I the front part nicely cured from marine warehouse and the back was uncured and cheap. Now after two months it's about ready to be loaded in the 29g.

What size tank are you building?
