Hello everyone!

I just stumbled across this site today. Nice place you all have here. I don't have any SW tanks... yet, but the idea has been floating around for a while now to try it. Especially after today when I was in Jo-mars admiring the SW tanks when Ryan ( I think thats his name ) suggested I try it. I need to buy a pressurized CO2 system first for my planted tanks before I dive into SW though.

Right now I have 5 FW planted community tanks. Anyone else here into planted tanks also? Are there any local clubs for FW?

Keep searching back though all our threads there was a thread on freshwater a couple of months ago. Can't remember who started it though. I think they had a meeting down your way. I did not get to attend so that is all I know about it.

Hope this helps. And I am sure someone who knows more about it will chime in here sometime this weekend.

I apologize. I wasn't sure if I had heard the name right.

Peyton, do you have any pictures of your tanks that you could post? I would like to see any pictures of local planted tanks.

I'm starting up a 10G planted tank using ADA Agua Soil. Currently awaiting some HC to be delivered which should be by the end of this coming week. I still need another plant though. I'm looking for a small leave medium height plant. Maybe Blyxa japonica? Someone recommended Rotala pusilla.

The rest of my setup included DIY type CO2 (Hagen unit) and 40W of screw in Compact Fluorescent lighting.

Blyxa japonica is a high light plant that might not do so well in your setup. It is a high light plant and difficult to grow. May I suggest something like Didiplis Diandra or Micranthemum umbrosum for your setup?

Also I would advise to be diligent in your CO2 mix changes. Try something like changing every other week or if possible run two bottles and change them alternativly.

Or better still get yourself a pressurized Co2 systems the results will be worth the investment.

Indeed, plants will do much better in a stable enviroment which of course is something DIY CO2 can not produce.

Reading up on AquaticPlantCentral has led me to believe that 40W over a 10 Gallon classifies as a high light setup. Do you dissagree with that?

I realize that DIY CO2 is not ideal, but I have heard of a lot of people having success with it in small tanks. Starting off I will stay with the Hagen unit as I do not have a cabinet for storage. However, I if this works out well and I decide to go with a bigger tank, I will go with pressurized CO2.

Thanks for the suggestions on Didiplis Diandra and Micranthemum umbrosum. I will look more into those.

The watts per gallon rule seems to break down over smaller tanks. Also since your bulb is in a spiral shape you are not getting the full 40w over the tank due to restrike.

I have a ten gallon with 2 25w spiral CF bulbs over it. Which at first look like 5wpg (very high light). However, judging from the plants I can grow successfully in it I would consider it a medium light tank. I also use no CO2 in this tank BTW, so for your setup it might not be necessary.

I have not been happy with my hood as the bulbs are touching the reflectors. They say it is not really a problem but I'm not happy with it. What is your thoughts on the 40W Satellite fixture? It comes with a SW bulb but I hear that some places will swap out the bulb for a more plant friendly one for a minimal charge.

We really need another forum for FW disscusion. I wonder if there is a way to have a sub-forum to this one? Maybe some sort of an offshoot to the CVRC?

Start one. One these message boards, it is not anything official. Just come up with a name and your in. Chemical Valley Aquaria Club? or whatever. I think piggy backing off one of the established forums would be the best place to start. Just have to see which ones haf local club forums. PlantedTank.net, AquariaCentral, AquaticPlantCentral, etc.

Actually I'm all for it and I can tell you I will not be involved in this one in any official manner.

I think piggy backing off one of the established forums would be the best place to start.

I disagree, anyone can ride on the pre-established fame of a pre-existing club, if you are original you will go much farther, that's what we have managed so far. The CVRC did not piggy back off of anyone and look at it today. It takes a great deal of work and effort to put these meetings together. My hats off to anyone who takes up this challenge though it's not easy. If you want to we can dedicate a space on the CVRC web page to help promote the group.

Very nice looking tank spinnerbayt. Here is a pic of my 40gal when it looked the best

My aquascape has fallen apart since that pic. Now it's just a bunch of plants growing in a tank, no shape to it what-so-ever.
I was thinking of reworking it next weekend.


How about the name Ohio Valley Aquatic Club?
