Just bought a new setup.... Salt help.......

Dapel you are seriously the saddest ****ing excuse of a salt water hobbyist I have ever read of! Wow- Hey uh guys umm some dude at saltwaterpiecesof****locallfs told me that um I need real saltwater and thats all i need is this good? AND YOU SAY YOU HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 7-8 years?! Wow all I can say is wow, do your fish die every other day? YOU DONT EVEN LISTEN TO DR. ROY WHOS WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE IS BASED ON STOMATOPODS! YOU ARE A ****ING SPED AND IM FED UP WITH YOUR ****ING BULL****!

Dapel,

in an attempt to calm this thread down, let us know what you have done so far, and let us advise you further. If you would like to continue receiving advice from this forum, it would be good to get you on-side to our way of thinking.

there are ways and means that we are talking about, and they do work. It maybe possible that you are just not getting your point across properly.

Either way, if you want to post questions and receive opinions DONT discount them. Respect what you are given.

Ok I'm fairly certain it's a troll, but I like to argue, so here we go.

Secondly I've been in this similar hobby for nearly 7-8 years now, but mainly dealing with land exotic animals/reptiles/fw creatures. Nothing too serious with sw until now.

Do yourself a favor, consider yourself a rookie. Having a FW land animal in an aquarium is nothing like maintainging a captive reef.

I'm just following my instructions from the LFS sw specialist
That's the most common newbie mistake. And the most expensive.

The damsels will be added to the sw just like adding goldfish to cycle fw tanks. No biggie and easily replaceable.
I won't ***** about the morality of using livestock to cycle, but it's completely pointless.

I just tested the salinity and it's perfect throughout the whole tank.
MAYBE it's perfect ... the instrument you are using is notoriously inaccurate.

I'm goning to bring in some water sample to the LFS and see what they think and then I'll go from there.
LFS' typically use the cheapest, not the best and most accurate test kits.

I grew up working next to an aquarium since I was in middle school.
I've eaten a lot of great food in my day. Does that make me a capable chef?

not a whole lot of people know about this package.
Actually most ppl do know about it. They know it's snake oil. Do YOU know about it?

All I asked for was help on the salinity but now has esclated into this nonsense.
Why ask for help if you're not gonna listen? I am not trying to be rude but the advice these ppl are offering to you is correct. You haven't found any secret. You don't know better than the 3,000,000,000 other people that tried to take a shortcut. Although this hobby is often supported by individual innovation, it remains a methodical activity which is most successful with careful planning , proper equipment and the right practices.

Good luck to you.

Hello finally a nice and mature person I can speak to. I didn't even bother to read the other junk (junk as in the useless unnecessary BS). Talk about helping others huh? There are too many assumptions about what I'm going to do, such as carelessly killing off animals when I don't need to. Why in the World would I want to do that anyways?

To answer your request I haven't put in any livestock yet. The water isn't right yet. The tank has been the same since the last 2 pictures that I have posted. Water is flowing good and I'm just waiting it out. As much as those "miracle bacteria packs" are, I'm a bit skeptical about it so I'm just going to wait for a week or two before testing the water again.

Many of you got mad when I said I was going to put in some Damsels the next day. Hey that's just what the "specialist" told me. Then the next day he says I can't do that because the water isn't right. So really I'm doing what he's telling me to do. Get mad at him guys, not me. I haven't done anything wrong, just setting up my new tank and that's it.

I apologize for any unneccessary comments that I may have said so now I hope that we can all get along. I can't really listen to those who have to always shout and act like they want to kill me because I said something they don't agree with, regardless if I'm right or wrong. Bottom line is that I wasn't really trying to take a shortcut, just pondering the other alternatives of cyclying the tank a bit faster that's all.

Hey Dapel you really should listen to these people they really know what they are talking about, so take their advice and you'll be better off.

Hey you guys said that if a tank was'nt supported the seams would crack, I have a 18g. acrylic tank that I put a ruler under one side to level it will this cause it to crack

Dapel, ok in my last attempt to save these damsels please listen to me. I understand that is what the saltwater specialist told you. He is telling you this so that you can complete the nitrogen cycle in your tank. It completes it because the fish poop which is the waste used to start the cycle. You DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS. Once the cycle begins it does brutal things to the fish. So you are killing them, please just do some homework sorry to spaz earlier bad day...

Once again, I'm not adding anything to the tank for a while. I hope everyone understands that by now. If anything the damsels will be in there firstly to see how the water is, and this won't be for a while so everyone please stop telling me to listen to something that I haven't even done.

What everyone here is telling me to do is hold off, which I am doing and that's that. No need for endless BS comments from members who are bored out of their *** and have the urge to troll in my thread. However credit is given where it is due.

Glad you're slowin things down. Keep us updated on the tank, I'd like to see how things are going. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. [i made a funny, hahaha]

Gar... I hit submit when RC went down for backup.

Setup for 1.25" mantis:
2.5 Gallon bowfront [blue top and base if that matters]
AquaClear mini [for water circulation/poss. mini fuge]
25w Marineland heater
10w 50/50 screw-in PC
2+ lbs LS
4+lbs LR from my main tank

Main tank:
16 Gallon bowfront
2x36w PC
1x32w PC
1x7w PC light from a "Razzle Dazzle" aka AquaVase
AquaC Remora skimmer w/ MJ1200
AquaClear 300 [for water movement/fuge 1x7w PC]
2x JBJ powerheads dual output[1 on 15 min. timer/1 constant]
25+ lbs LR
30+ lbs LS

Please keep in mind that I will upgrade the tank for the mantis when the time comes. As of now I have 2x4g betta tank with dividers, a 5g, an e6, 7g minibow[pending sale], a couple 10 gallons, an 18T, a 20L and a 50g. So upgrading is just a matter of setting up one of the many tanks I have available.

I do weekly water changes of 15% with "Catalina" salt water and top off with DI water from my Aquarium Pharm Tap Water Purifier. Gratis from Mike @ Aquarium Pharm back in my LFS days..

I am going to upgrade to a 150w MH Pendant setup soon, all IceCap of course. :D

If there's anything else you'd like to know, please feel free to ask. I drive an 02 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner, just thought I'd throw that into the mix, lol. I also have 3 New Caledonian Crested Geckos. [<-- this happens when you work at the LFS and become good friends with people/employees at the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley]

Interesting collection you have. I might also mention that I also live around Berk and should I need some other professional help I could point to a few of you guys here.

Where is the aquarium around Berk that sells Mantids?

-Dan

BTW, thanks for the car info. I'm a complete car freak, sold my FD RX-7 and currently drive a 00 GSR. :D

BTW #2, about the cold blooded animals, I'd love to see some pictures of your Geckos. I used to have a quite a collection myself including Bearded Dragons (housed in a 200gal), 15 corn snakes, a paif of Eyptian Sand Boas, an Argentine Horned frog, a nest full of Preying Mantids in a 10gal, and a bunch of mice.

Best place is Tropical Paradise, you might try lucky goldfish in oakland but i havent been there since theyve moved to their new place. Off to bestbuy now, yawn..

Pics of geckos later...
