What kind of lens do you have on there? You have some good close-ups.

errrr...Its a Nikon 18-55mm. It came with the camera. I thought I would have to get a macro lense to take close ups but I guess not. Well this is a s close as I need to get IMO. Not really worth the money for closer pics.

I would like to get a lens that is good for taking pics of my kids on the sports fields. Any suggestions?

Kids and sports fields guess that would be a longer zoom and it has to be a fast one to freeze the action which comes down to expensive or ver expensive.
the best options would be the 80-200 (check if it sutofocuses on a D40) more expensive options would be the 70-200VR
cheaper options that would still work if its open playgrounds in daylight 55-200VR : Cheapest Vr option but still good IQ
70-300 VR better image quality and more reach than 55-200 for a little more. watch out there is a non VR 70-300 that is not reprted to be a very good one that was thte G type non VR then an ED 70-300 was made and it was a bit better. last version is the 70-300VR and that's a very good lens for the price.

Thanks for the info.

The 50-200VR is the least expensive of the VR lens, check around on monster and bhp, you can find it for $250

Yeah...I got the 55-200VR as a kit lens and was surprised to find such shining reviews. They say it's some of the best bang for your buck. I've definitely been enjoying mine.

Congrats on your new NIKON camera! :) You did a great job with out of the box shots with your new camera. Good luck with it!

My favorite shot is the of the pink zoas.

Man, I love your pics. I have a nikon d40 that will be arriving today and am glad to see that you do not have to be a settings expert to get decent pics. I went with a refurb w/ lens for $400 from Adorama

BTW, if anyone needs a D40 BJ's has them for $480 new. Honestly, I would have probably paid the extra $80 for new, but did not see the deal until the day after my camera shipped.

BTW, if you want Macro shots without spending the $$$ on a macro specific lens, then a lot of people suggest extension tubes. After reading some other peoples thread there is a seller that everyone suggested on Ebay, cowy70. Just do a search for
"MACRO SHOT EXTENSION RING SET for Nikon D200 D40 D70s", it was like $16 shipped. The shipping is from China and takes a couple weeks. Personally I am not recommending them as I am a newby when it comes to non-point and shoot pictures, but I figured it was worth $16 to give it a try.

damn thats a good deal at BJ's. I just ordered the macro kit for $15.58 shipped. Ill give it a try.

Did you use a tripod on those shots? They are nice! The fish shots are great. I am new to all this as well. Just got my DSLR on Monday. If you didn't use a tripod it seems your hands are a lot steadier than mine. :)

I'm a newbie with cameras too and also bought those extension rings. It seemed kind of shady and took three weeks to get here, but they eventually got here and you really couldn't beat the price. It's pretty hard to get good shots with them. You lose a lot of light using extension tubes, so using them with the kit lenses really doesn't help a ton. I borrowed an old 70's era 50mm f1.4 from my parents though and that with the extension tubes is pretty cool. Anyways...to do any kind of macro shots I think you are going to need a tripod...which I don't have. Also, get used to manual mode as with those tubes your camera will have no idea that there is even a lens attached.

This is simply a quick start to get you into playing with the settings, put the camera in "A" mode. Then hit the very bottom left button (magnifying glass?) then use the thumb dial to change the fstop, set it to something like 14-18 this gives you some basic controls until you figure out the manual settings.... The higher the fstop setting the more detail the background will have, but the higer the fstop the longer slower the shutter will be, so a tripod is critical. I would also set the iso to 200.....good luck and have fun........with a little trial and error you have some incredible images in no time

With the kit lens 18-55mm you can produced nice and clear pictures like these, I bet you don't need Macro lens at all. Great Shots. The colorful Zoo's is best !!! :)
