With the kit lens 18-55mm you can produced nice and clear pictures like these, I bet you don't need Macro lens at all.
I was originally using the 18-55 lens and decided to get the 105mm Macro VR, the difference in image quality is amazing, has to do with the quality of the optics used inside the lens. You can capture very good images using the 18-55 but when you start really getting into macro work you start to notice all the superfine details.

Great pictures:) I just got the D40x with the 18-55 lens and the 55-200 VR all for about $650 from cameraddict.com!!! Amazing price and I've had no problems at all (referb would have been even cheaper!). Just checked their prices and it's $611 right now. I'd highly recommend them and the camera (no, I don't work for them, I just spent a lot of time researching prices and they had the best deal by far).

We've just started setting up our 28g Nano tank and I'm starting to take pictures to get used to it! A little different getting the pictures the way I want because of the 150W HQI bulb!!!!!

Andy.

wow everyone is getting new cameras!

i just got:

d40x kit (with 18-55mm)
uv filter
2gb 80x card
105mm vr macro lens

all for 1400. i think it was a pretty good price and from a reputable dealer.

i get my camera next week. beleive you me...ill be taking alot of pictures

Nikon had a 100 dollar rebate going last week... I picked up a new D40 with 18-55mm kit, extra battery and a 55-200mm VR lens for $570 shipped from amazon. Yes it was all new and yes it was the VR version of the 200mm lens. Arrived for me on Thursday.
Ken Rockwell's site was tipping people off the the deal... they ran out quickly and I think the instant rebate savings expired everywhere on 2/16.

From his site:

People are writing to tell me that Amazon has been reneging (canceling confirmed orders) on some of the great D40 deals people ordered last week. Weird; Amazon claims they goofed.

In any case, I guess I was right in noting that it was a great deal!

One reader was lucky enough to have had Amazon ship only his D40, but not the extra VR lens, so they shipped his D40 with all the discounts that applied to everything and cancelled the rest, sending him his D40 kit for only about $357. Others who ordered as msoon as I mentioned it did get everything as expected at the killer price, for instance, one reader wrote to say he got the D40, 18-55mm lens, 55-200mm VR, spare battery, and the remote control for $585 dollars shipped. You just never know.

I've never found any business more upstanding than Amazon. I won't flog them for having made the first mistake about which anyone has ever told me in ten years of me being a customer. They've never screwed up any of my orders.

...I missed on ordering the remote, but I guess I still lucked out.

I could not resist picking it up, even though I just bought a Nikon P5100 recently. ...still keeping that though, it's an outstanding camera for all the reasons I bought it for, even more now that I'm kinda 'all in' with Nikon gear.

D40 and D40X owners, what are your thoughts about the proprietary lenses needed for this camera due to the fact that the body has no AF motor? It is the one thing holding me back from purchasing this camera.

Thanks in advance.

... how many and what lenses do you think you're going need is kinda what you have to ask yourself.
I have a couple of lens types on my wish list, (for one of them, a macro, AF isn't a requirement) and if I find myself going beyond that I'll likely be moving to another body as well.

One thing to have in mind is that with the success Nikon has had with the D40 and x in addition to the D60 launch there should be plenty of choices moving forward. Both from Nikon and other lens manufacturers.

From looking at Adorama there are other lenses with built in motors. You maybe locked into more expensive lense, but not just Nikon.

There are many lenses available with built in motors. There are many Nikons with motors (if i recall, the "AF-S") and any Sigma labeled "HSM".

I bought the D40X a few months back. Love it!!!

Guys, what lens is good for super tight macro shots that will come out clear?? I have the 18-55 and 55-200...

Steve,

I've got the D40x and the same two lenses and have been trying to find out the same thing:) Looks like the best bet, if money is not a problem, is to go with the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED - about $750:p Out of my price range right now, the tank took all the money:lol:

Now, I've got an old Sigma 28-80 macro lens that I tried tonight and that didn't produce bad shots! I also found the following forum post that discusses this issue:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/d40slr/discuss/72157603533016140/

They'll suggest the Nikon or get an older Nikon 55mm fixed length macro lens (eBay has quite a few that run anywhere from ~$100 to $300).

Last choice, and one I'm going to try as soon as my extension rings get here, is...extension rings:) I'll just add them to my current zoom lenses. There are a few threads of example pictures of just that - do a search for d40x and take a look. The extension rings are only going to cost me ~$20 (Hong Kong, vie eBay!).

Hope that helps,
Andy.

Okay my Ext. Rings just cam in....How do you use them...lol

I see numbers 1,2,3 but there are no instructions?

Anyone have experience?

RedSpot,
I am sitting here laughing because ours must have been in the same container and customs, I received mine yesterday as well.

I think I saw that using #3 worked well, but I wonder what EV, SS, and AF should I start with.

Well it looks like 123 are like the powers on magnification. If I put my camera in manual mode I can get decent pice with an ISO of 8, but how do you change the fstop?

Heres what I have so far.

Shot #1 Nikon D40 Macro setting with 18-55 lens zoomed in all the way. Indoors

Shot#2 Added all 3 rings, I had to take the flower outside into Extreme bright light!! I dialed the ISO to 8!!
