Just found AEFW. Now what?

I had AEFW back in September. They appear to have come in on a Purple Nana that I bought from a local shop. I posted a thread on here and most folks recommended that I try out Coral RX Pro. I'm happy to report that it worked for me. Hopefully it will work for you. Follow the directions for the product (30 drops to a gallon of tankwater), use a turkey baster to direct water over the corals, and use a toothpick to gently loosen the eggs. Dip for 5-10 minutes then dip in a second container with fresh tankwater to remove the chemical. I did it everyday for a week, 4-5 times the second week, and so on until I was dipping 2-3 times a week and I continued for 8 weeks. I managed to save several very nice tips and the encrusting part at the base of the stalk. I mounted the pieces on two frag plugs and now I've got two nanas that are growing nicely.

Good luck,

hey preef how is your treatment going?what have you been using for treatment? ive been using an iodine based dip. i know its a little harsh so i ordered some coral rx today. the kicker is it wont get here till monday. i have a nice red planet thats starting to rtn and im starting to worry. should i dip it in the seachem i have or wait the 4 or maybe 5 days to get the coral rx?

Well, everything that went into my tank was dipped in the seachem iodine based dip. Either the frag had eggs on it when it went in or the seachem wasn't effective.

I have some Revive dip. Smells just like Pine-Sol. If I see any other corals that look stressed I'll dip in that.

Sorry to hear about the AEFW.

What I did when I caught it on a few of my colonies is...obviously dip all that were not already encrusted. I also dusted SPS dialy and added a Melanarus wrasse. This kicked the AEFW, but unfortunately just went thru RB's about 2 wks ago :( Quickly solved that with some Interceptor!!!

Interceptor was really painless. I still have two more doses to go but so far everything lived - except the Red Bugs. As far as the AEFWs go, I ordered an Adorned Wrasse that Tony_B from the UK recommended. I won't get it until the 4th. I already have a Radiant Wrasse in the tank.

I'm inspecting for eggs daily on the frags I can see and so far so good. After Christmas I plan on pulling a couple of frags and dipping just to see if they spread elsewhere. I have several corals that are really encrusted so it's impossible to remove everything.

What do you mean by dusting? Do you mean blowing them off with a turkey baster or power head?

Thanks Mike. Glad you made it through the AEFWs. That really sounds like a lot of work. I hope I don't need to do that.

Sorry to hear about your AEFW battle. I went through a bad AEFW problem a few months back. Seems like AEFW is pretty common now a days. Its probably the worst ACRO pest there is. Hope you make it through with little coral damage as possible. Good Luck!

Well its been about three months and things were looking pretty good. Bought the Adorned Wrasse as suggested.

I noticed my tricolor was starting to lose color at the bottom where my Sunset Monti and the encrusting tri-color met. I then saw some other white areas and was wondering why it was STNing on me. I took a closer look and.....

This frag had heavily encrusted so I pulled it out and dipped it hard in Revive. I then entombed the encrusted area with super glue covered with epoxy.

I put the frag back on the sand bed and dipped again the following week. Nothing came off and it looks like the bite marks are healing. I was wondering why I never found any eggs. I thought maybe they were on the encrusted area. I then found them on the bottom of the plug.

Scraped off the entire encrusted area with eggs using a knife.

All other acros look good and I'm basting now. Even after being dipped hard I still have good PE on the tri-color. The amazing thing is these buggers attacked fast and hard. I look at my corals closely practically everyday. The tri-color is close to the front and is easy to monitor. I've been keeping a close eye on it because I know AEFWs find them quite tasty. They literally went to town on it overnight. Maybe I should have kept the red bugs.

I'm more concerned about everything else. Wish me luck.

i never saw another aefw after i got my sixline around a year ago. sucks to hear man, goodluck. theyre a real pain in the bum

Save the headache and throw out the SPS. Wait a year while enjoying your fish and LPS, and start over with SPS at the end of the year.

for those of you who say just recently you had them , and you didnt go to the extreme measure of removing absolutely everything from the tank you cannot claim you have beaten them.

Its highly unlikely you dont still have them in the system and that they wont become apparent to you again. They can be managed, but they cannot be truly erradicated without extreme measures.

Ive said many times before to anyone who has never had these things, to not just do generic dips and *think* you are guaranteeing anything. If you love yoru sps you need to go out of your way to get some live worms in your possession and prove for yoruself what it rteally takes to actually get all of the worms off of the coral and not introduce any eggs. Generic dips according to what you have read many times doesnt cut it. QT is of course best, but if you dont have that luxury you will be best off proving for yourself what it actually takes to get the job done

sorry to hear of your woes preef. :( Good luck
