I have tried both and the 17-85 is definitely the sharper lens. If you are a on a budget, you might want to go with a cheaper camera like the XSi or T1i when it comes out and get yourself a better lens. The lens is much more important than the body when it comes to photo quality.

PLus if you got used to or like the size, shape, and feel of the XTi, you might want to stick to the Rebel series.

Ya know... I think you hit it right on the head. Im just gonna wait and get the T1i. I was already comfortable with the XTi and liked the feel and size. Im just impatient and want to buy NOW. lol
Im gonna wait. :bum:

Please elaborate. It often seems to be a less expensive option.

I have an unnatural, and probably unhealthy, hate for the 28-135; avoid it at all costs. :)

The 28-135 is a terrible landscape lens. I had one and hated it. The happiest memory, that I have, of that lens is the day that I sold it. It's not wide enough at the short end and it's not long enough to be really useful. Color saturation isn't good, the zoom is sloppy and creeps, it's very soft, the IS is an early generation and isn't especially good, the build quality stinks.....

I went from the original kit lens on the RebelXT to the 28-135. Al I had to compare it to was the kit lens so it seemed okay at first. Then I got my Tokina 12-24 and realized what a piece of garbage it was. I don't have a single picture, that I'm happy with, from that lens.

Save your money and get the 24-105 or 24-70 instead.

Your really get what you pay for in photography especially with lenses and flash units. Less expensive options are almost always less quality options and you can take that to the bank.

I don't want to talk you out of a 50D (have one and love it), but if you are used to a rebel sized body and want another one like it (nothing wrong with that I also have an XSi and love it too), make sure you check out the new one x1t I think it is called. It looks pretty sweet. It has a lot of the same features as the 50D and it does video.
