Just had my first casualty today.

cato

New England
My baby blue tang got too close to my Aquaclear 70 powerhead and got sucked into the intake.:( :sad1: By the time I noticed it was too late. Ruined my day.

Now I have to try to figure a way to explain what happened to my 3 yr old little girl when she wakes up from her nap and wonders where Dory is. Raw deal.

Sorry to hear that. It is amazing how attached we get to our fish.

Andrew

Yeah, my wife actually discovered it and was freaking out almost in tears.

Are there any measures I can take to prevent future casualties?

Sorry to hear about your loss...being a father of two yutes, I understand how difficult it can be.

Couple things to try for the future...

One...I would put a piece of foam over the intake. Keep in mind that in going this route, you will need to clean it periodically.

Another choice would be to take a tube that would fit over the intake, cap the end and drill holes throughout the tube. This way, if something gets sucked to an opening, the power in one hole would not be strong enough to kill the fish.

sorry to hear about your loss I know how attached how children get to fish another solution is to attach a intake basket from a canister filter to the intake of your powerheads you can buy them from most LFS and drill a couple of holes in the solid area of the basket and a couple of holes in the bottom cover of the powerheads and attach them with plastic zip ties make sure you use the zip ties that are all plastic some of them have a piece of metal inside the head to hold the zip tie it works well for me.
