Just when you thought your day could not get any worse

use some alcohol rubbing pads to clean the area make sure you get all of the old off i just went through the same thing only i caught mine before i had 120 on the ground . a plastic spoon works well to smooth out the silicon i redid my 4 corners and not a drop has leaked ... i just used a razor blade ... i kept taking it off untill it has hard to remove then went 2 more inches good luck !!!

Sorry to hear the news. Been there once before, the first SW tank I bought brand new filled it up and 6 months later the seal broke during the day while I was at work. No warning either, just a stream of water, my poor wife was in a state of shock. I lost all 90 gallons in a apartment, on the second floor, yea neighbors didn't like that. I guess I lucked out, IM LON 2 came to my rescue and the LFS that I bought it from replaced the tank.

Hope all works out for you.

ok so I am cleaning the sand out of the tank. I just bought all the sand but I am not going to be able to put it back in without cleaning it. I am not buying new. How should I go about cleaning it? I thought maybe just wash it through like a window screen or something . I hope to have the tank clean tomorrow then I can start cutting the silicon out of it. nothing looks to be cracked. Then I am going to fill it with tap water and let it sit for at least a week or two before I start putting anything back in. I am trying not to hurry this. everything seems to be doing alright in the sump. the foxface is stressed out a lot. but they are all eating.

Thank goodness your tank was in the basement. Good to see your going stick with it and not give up.

If you do try to reseal your tank be sure to have the glass very clean, very clean, AND very clean and very dry before applying new silicone. If you want the silicone to look good, you can purchase a swiping tool (funny V-shaped squeegee thing) for a few bucks, or just wet your finger as you swipe it out, then after it cures, trim it with a razor blade. Give the new silicone plenty of time to cure-as long as possible-before you freshwater test. ncox38 is right on about the GE I silicone, it works well. GE I is also available in black, though you may have a hard time trying to find it locally without placing a "special order".

Best of luck to you panaboy.

On cleaning the sand, put a few pounds in a bucket, take it outside and shove the hose in it, and when you see a bunch of crap rolling around in there, pour off the water.

Essentially a rinse and repeat thing. Set that sand aside after a thorough rinsing, and repeat with some more sand.

I would use RO water to rinse it. I'm not sure if the sand will hold anything or not, but I rinsed mine in RO water to be safe. Basically the same way though, I use a maxijet and 2 buckets 1 with the RO water which I bought the hose to fit the maxijet and filled the sand with it stirred it and the poured it off and repeat.

Well i have the tank cleaned out. All the sand is out. i am going to start cutting the silicon out. I can not see that the silicon has pulled from the glass anywhere. I guess we will just give it the old college try. If it does not work i am really going to enjoy beating it with a sledgehammer.

When it is full of water and sand, there i squite a bit of pressure and flex on a tank.

Good Luck, and have you looked on the Glasscages website?!? lol If you need a new tank that is...

I got all the silicon cut out of it. after crawling around in the tank for close to two hours. The tank is just not big enough to crawl around in. I just can not reach over the top good enough. This is the last 30" tank I will ever own. I love the room in this tank but hate the height of it. it is to hard to clean it and grab anything of the bottom.

well i got all the silicon in. i hope this works. how long do you think i should let it set up before fresh water testing. i am thinking at least 3 days. i am thinking friday or sat night filling it with freshwater. if it still leaks i am not sure what i am going to do. well wish me luck.

well the tank has fresh water in it. i filled it last night about 9 and the floor is still dry today. so far so good. i am going to keep the fresh water in it for a week or two before i start dripping ro water into the tank.

well the tank is back up and running. It has been a little slow going. My wife had some health issues and I about cut my finger off with a power plainer. So a couple sets of hospital bills later it finally has water and livestock in it again. it is going through a little cycle right now I think it is from using the old sand. But the hair algae is starting to go away now. this is what it looks like now.

Good work, another event that proves if you can power through the tuff times the hobby will continue to reward you.

Hope all is well with you and your wife. Power plainer, OUCH!!!

Everything is good at home now. Yes the power plainer hurt like you would not belive but the worse part about it I could not put my left hand in the tank for almost a month and I am left handed. that makes for hard maintenance. So I had to wait till it healed up good enough to get a surgical glove on that hand. And to top it all of I am a auto tech so keeping my fingers clean was a chore. All better now except I have no feeling in the end of my middle finger. Fun Fun.

The tank is doing good I just got a new clean up crew from reeftopia today. Most of my snails and such did not make it through the ordeal. Partly my fault not looking enough for live snails. just thought some where shells. I only lost one fish thought the deal and it was my fault. my coral beauty got sucked up in the return pump when I started the pumps back up. Everything else made it alright. All and all it was not as bad as it could have been . I think in a year or so I may look for a 180 or something. but we will see how this works out. I am pretty confident in the job and think it will be fine.

Thanks for all the support. there was a time when I figured out what I wanted for everything. I am glad I did not sell it I would miss it.
