Just witnessed a major clown fight

I have had my two clowns for a month or possibly two now. The dominate was in there about 3 weeks ahead of the submissive one. In the begining the dom. one would chase the sub. one and he would do his little convulsive dance thing and it would be fine. That soon went away and they were buddies. They get along fine.

I was just cleaning some algea off the glass and saw this orange rolling ball in the tank.

The dominant clown had an entire front fin of the submissive one in its mouth and looked like it was going to pull it off, jerking back like he was tugging on it. This went on for about 5 or 10 seconds before it let go.

Once he let go the submissive on looks/acts fine, but what would cause such a "Fight" or is this some kind of mating ritual or something. I wouldnt think they would be to that point so soon though.

Happens to some clowns when the female fells like she needs to remind the male who is the boss.This is just her way of showing who is the boss.

I saw my female true perc do the same thing to my male perc. Whipped him around like a rag doll in her mouth. It was pretty intense and awesome.

This happens in the wild too. It's not like it happens in just our tanks. It's kind of like feeding some fish live feeder fish. In my opinion, that is both impressive and awesome.

BTW, awesome means awe inspiring as well as impressive.

I believe Animal Planet gained its fame by the "awesome" video they would broadcast of lions taking down antelopes and crocs devouring goats.

Its not awesome to purposely harm any animal, but to witness pure, raw nature right in front of you...that is pretty friggin' cool.

We beat the hell out of each other and charge money to watch, its called boxing lol.

I'm not complaining against letting it happen, and I'm certainly not a tree hugger-but there is a major differnce between being fascinated at watching nature happen, as most of us seem to view it as (and as Animal Planet got famous for, as ryandlf pointed out), but saying that it was "intense and awesome" that a fish was wipped around "like a rag doll in her mouth" isn't expressing the same fascination. That's showing delight in the pain of an animal.

Tell me-if someone put 2 Queen angels in a tank, would everyone be as interested in watching "nature in action", or would people be saying, "that's cruel"?

Have you ever seen ferrets mate? The male literally bites the female on the neck and grabs hold. It whips her around and basically beats the crap out of her until she finally gives in and mates with him. The clownfish are kind of doing the same thinng (just with the opposite sex).

putting 2 queen angels in the same tank and watching them go at it is similar to doing it with fighting dogs. Obviously if you put them in the tank together you know they will fight it out. I'm sure you can see the difference between doing that and trying to pair clownfish. I'd be surprised if anyone here thought that was okay.

There's a difference between realizing that the clowns will fight, and taking pleasure in watching them do it. And yeah, I actually had a pair of ferrets a few years back-nasty little rodents. By no means do I mean that you shouldn't pair clowns-they're the easiest breeding fish available to most marine hobbyists. My issue was when he called it "awesome" that they were fighting. IMO, that was what was out of line.
