nice setup. I have a 20L but im running 4 vhos
Thanks alot. I thought about buying a few more lbs of live rock, which I still may do, but I'm happy with the low-lying design of the rocks. I didn't just want the live rock to be covered with low-profile corals like zoas and ricordea, so that's why I left plenty of room corals that grow upwards.WarEagleNR88 said:K9, that 3rd pic of your first post in this thread is really good. I like the spread out look of your reef.
OK, here's the lowdown on the lights. I bought this ballast from HelloLights.com: http://www.hellolights.com/22elarovhoba.html and added the options of two pairs of endcaps, a power cord, no reflector, and two 24" URI bulbs. It was $95.50 w/o shipping and I chose 3-day UPS ($18.00 more), so the total was $113.50 with shipping. I got one actinic bulb and one 50/50 bulb. It was a VERY cheap route to go in order to get 150w of light. Plus, VHOs are more intense per watt than PCs. As far as heating is concerned, my canopy is totally enclosed except for about 1/2" in the back for the wires to come out, and the top has a little hinged door about 3" wide (and runs the length of the tank) that I leave open during the day when the lights are on. The temp goes no higher than 80F during the day and drops to about 77 or 78 at night. I don't even have a heater on this tank. I asked a question in the SPS forum about keeping SPS corals under VHOs and got some very positive responses. That thread is located here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=663369 if you'd like to read it. Oh, one last thing, the bulbs are 3" above the surface of the water.WarEagleNR88 said:Can you go into further detail about your lights? Ballasts, where'd you get them, for how much? They're pretty sweet and they light your tank very well. I just wonder if they'll really benefit SPS when you start putting them into your tank. I've been wondering about the differences between VHO and PC. I'm running 3x96W PCs about 4" off the water and I have to use a couple of PC fans inside the canopy blowing over the fans and out of the canopy to keep the water around 80-82 degs. Are VHOs that hot as well?
I really like the low-and-wide look as well. It's funny you compare it to widescreen TVs because when I buy a DVD, I only get the widescreen version and my TV is a Hitachi 46" widescreen HDTV as well. It really is the ONLY way to watch a movieWarEagleNR88 said:But good job again going with the 20L instead of the 10G. They're pretty sweet and I like the wide angled look of the 20L. It's similar to the look of a widescreen TV compared to a normal sized screen. I kind of want my next tank to be either a 20L or a 40 breeder and if so I've got to wonder about the whole MH/PC/VHO question of lighting.
Yeah, Ich is an evil SOB, isn't it? I don't mind waiting 6 weeks though because when I'm ready to add a fish to my tank again, it will be just that much more mature and have many more corals in it by then. I've already marked the day on my calendar tooWarEagleNR88 said:Damn, sorry to hear that K9. Ich is bad, grrrr.
Where was that cleaner shrimp at?!? Probably jazzing around the side of the tank like a retard.
Good luck dude.
