Kadmat, India

Just back from a month long study abroad class in India, where I was able to spend four days on Kadmat , part of the Lakshadweep Islands. Most of the time was spend snorkeling the west side of the island working on a research project, but I did have time for 2 amazing dives. There was an incredible amount of life, but the coral was still recovering from a bleaching event in 1998. Here are some of the videos I took, I was doing some behavioral work on the black damsel with the white tail in most of the videos.

and a picture from diving, someone has run off with the dive video's I had so I will post them when I figure out who has them.

more low tide, you could walk out to the breaker and many locals go out to collect octopus

The fishing nets that they use to catch the fish

These things are heavy! It takes 4 men to pull them up and down.

A few things that we brought in....

Not a good days catch for them

Wow! Thank you for sharing. I understand the islands are fairly basic, which i like. How was the food? I'm planning a trip to India this year. I was thinking of making the trip to Lakshadweep, but I wasn't sure about the reported coral bleaching. I guess I should go a little further south to the Maldives.

I enjoyed the food, and it was definetly basic. Plan on taking an entire day to get to any of the islands other than Agatti. I loved the dives but I wasnt there for the coral. It was hard for us to get everything together to go to the islands, bu it may have been because we were such a large group. I'm working on getting back there sometime this year for graduate school work and hope to get permssion to hit some of the other islands.

But here are a few of our dive video's.....

found this guy in my bed

And he was one of many, one of his cousins on the mainland decided to hitchike between hotels in my bag. Made a great scene, he came darting out when one of my classmates opened it and ran between all of our legs and out the window.

Some of the other wildlife that I saw when I was there

Except maybe for this one, which we were told was extremely venomous. By far the ugliest spider I've ever seen, and my other hobby is keeping arachnids so I have a passion for the creepy crawlies.

Had to stop so the guys could cross the road, it was the biggest herd our guide had ever seen in the 6 years he had been working in the preserve.

More pictures and video's to come, the rest of my dive video's are on my computer in my lab
