kalk paste on aiptasia

ooooohhhhh the look perfect, ive got to do more reasearch on them tho. i guess im stuck between a bristletail filefish and some berghia. any ideas people?
 
Once they eat all the apt. They will starve to death. You might want to check to see if they will eat the whole anemone family or just aptasias.
 
ok thats what i figured. it shouldnt matter what anemones they will eat cause i dont have an anemone in the 75 but i might add 1 later on if i get a GSM. ill look it up.
 
They will die once all the aptasia are gone, unless you give them to someone else or to the LFS......They turn white when they are hungry and will die in about one week when they have nothing else to eat...
 
I have some aiptasia in my tank and so far I've been using Joe's juice. Since switching from boiling water they don't seem as plentiful, but they appear in more sporadic locations. I have tried peppermint twice, 3 of them each time, but I have a wrasse that seems to get them every time before they get the aiptasia.

I imagine berghias wouldn't last long in this case either?

Anyone have any other suggestions?
 
I feel your pain as I'm going through the same. My problem started with 2 on a frag plug that somehow ended up in hundreds. Tried the kalk paste, kills them but I couldn't keep up with the rate they were multiplying. Lemon juice just made them more aggravated and spread eggs everywhere. Aiptasia-X wasn't working out too well, seemed that when they popped from it they just multiplied. I also bought a CBB and it loves food and pods, hasn't touched a single aiptasia or coral. Beautiful fish however. I also got a filefish, same deal with him also. Eats pods all day and food i feed. Then i got 6 peppermint shrimp that all hide under rocks and haven't seen them touch anything. Next is the berghias, but that might just become an expensive snack for the hungry mouths in the tank lol.....Ever consider lasers? I got mine in the mail on the way hopefully by next week. A 3 watt blue laser.
 
If you can get the rocks out of your system, I would do that. If you want to try salvaging the rock, treat it in a quarantine tank. That way the aptasia will not spread to unaffected rock in your tank.

I tried several of the outlined methods over a 4 month period and just kept getting more tiny aptasia. Killed three large ones, got 15 back. Killed 15, got 30 back, Killed 30 got 100 back... They are nasty buggers.
 
I had a couple get in my 40 on frag plugs but took immediate action about it. I put a peppermint shrimp in there asap and he knocked it down in a week or so. My LFS had a bad outbreak in their display tank and I watched him use that aptasia x stuff that looks like foam paste and it cleared his tank up in 2 treatments putting it directly in the nems mouth. I was shocked at how fast it killed them all
 
The Joe's juice I've been using has been killing them instantly, and I haven't had the problem of multiplying, but basically every time I kill one, another pops up halfway across the tank. They're never in the same place with the Joe's juice like they were with boiling water and kalk paste.

Maybe I should try the laser. At least I wouldn't have to reach into the tank every time...

Though I've been having to do that lately anyway because I've also been finding and pulling out those little white nuisance starfish at a rate of about 6 per day as well. I'm about ready to get a Harlequin and let my serpent star be a sacrifice.(he hides under about 120lbs of live rock)

Was the laser specifically marketed that way, or did you look for certain stats?

The laser wasn't marketed this way. I went by what others have used with their problem. There's tons of posts on using lasers. I wish I can tell you how my experience is with it, but I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. Hopefully this week. There was a huge delay in shipment from the seller unfortunately.
 
I have not had success with Aptasia X or Joes juice or Kalk but those methods are always worth a try. I have had good results with Kleins butterfly's which have been reef safe in my experience. I have seen others have success with copperbands and tinkers in reef set ups. If you go the laser route--study up on the ophthalmologic dangers as they are weapons if misused. There are a few good videos on them also.
 
Well, it seems that the Joe's juice that I was using has been getting some help. I have gotten down to discovering about one head every 2 weeks, and attributed it to the juice. However, it seems one of my peppermint shrimp has managed to survive my wrasses attention and must be assisting in this drastic reduction
