Kalk slurries

This may seem like a silly question.. but how exactly do you measure 1/16th of a teaspoon?? The smallest measuring spoon I've seen is 1/4 teaspoon, or do you use lab grade equipment that I assume would be much smaller.

cooking spoons :) At a culinary supply shoppe, bakery section of department stores, etc. Comes with a set of measuring spoons. Do peep them with a google search.

Put another way... you may recall hearing (even doing) only monthly partial water changes on general marine aquariums. Many folks keep tanks this way. In fact... few newbies do more than 25% monthly. And for many folks with the monthly partials (or less often)... months slip into years and these tanks chug along well enough.

You mean we are supposed to do water changes too???:) j/k

That actually may be part of my situation. My current batch of IO is very low in Ca and Mg. So after each water change I need to get the levels back up to NSW.

The last few days I have been trying a modified slurry method. I decreased the nightly dosing a little and then in the morning when the pH is low I have been giving a shot of 1/2 tsp Kalk. It does not raise the Ph more than .2 . Will try this for a while and test this weekend. Thanks.

Bump - if I may ....

This was a fascinating discussion of the slurry technique.

I am quite curious as to the results after a month...

TIA

slurry and curry!

slurry and curry!

I mix a teaspoon of slurried kalwasser (kent's dry kalk mix) nightly for a week, then nothing. I just add straight RO for topoffs, then bi-weekly I change 10+g with new saltwater. Now, I am not sure if this is the best method, and right now I am having major hair algae problems, that just wont go away, I think its time for a tds for my ro, and yesterday I finally replaced my filters after 6 months, and they were a gross brown color... yuck. I flushed my memebrane and hopefully should see some results now.

take care
Dave

ps Thank Anthony for your condolences. very much appreciated my friend!

Anthony, ok.....on a medium calcium demand 150 gallon reef
with a 30 gallon sump.....wht would a TYPICAL (not necessarily ideal) but typical measurement method of dosing be? IE: 1 tsp per night of Kalk stirred in a cup poured into sump????? Does that sound typical / reasonable? Thanks.

Does that sound typical / reasonable? I am using Calcium reactor already but I like the idea of helping to precipitate phosphates with the KALK..... Thanks.
