Kalkwasser Reactor Workshop

Pyro--meant as a compliment--I appreciated the help.

I haven't ordered yet....is there any functioning difference between pickling lime and kwalk?

Kalkwasser mix and pickling lime are identical--both are calcium hydroxide.

You can get pickling lime at any place that sells supplies for canning and jelly-making; Mrs. Wage's is a popular brand. Here's one that offers it by the pound or the case:

You can always just split the case with some people--
Sometimes Walmart has it too, especially at this time of year, and that's where I've gotten it in the past (it's inexpensive enough to stock up on).

Another good homemade additive is Arm and Hammer Washing Soda-- it is Calcium Carbonate, and the additive of choice for raising alkalinity. (Note: Baking soda is Calcium Bicarbonate and also works, though not as efficiently). You can find it in the grocery store near the cleaning supplies. As with any additives, make sure it is fragrance- and additive-free (the stuff they sell around here always is).

Here's a good calculator for figuring out the doses of additives you need to use to effect the chemistry changes you want:

As with any water chemistry changes, if you are looking to make a big change, do it SLOWLY, as in over days, so you don't shock your livestock--
