keepin corals close

Whats the deal with certain corals being close- I now have an all out war going on between my Lobophylia and duncans- how come I see a lot of other tanks with all the corals being so close together in fact touching each other. do I need to segragate corals by species?? I understand I have to leave a lot of space around the torch and my hammer, but also my open brain?
what do you guys think? did I pick the wrong corals to keep?
