Keeping a Blenny in a Nano

Just wondering if anyone has an real life experiance keeping a Blenny in a 10 gallon?

Did you have luck with a certain type (Midas, Bi-color, etc..), would you do it again, any other info?

Thanks for any answers.

i had a bicolor in my 10g, and he did great. I loved him he added so much character to the tank and was fun to watch....killed me to come home and find him carpet surfing :( my fault i guess for not covering the tank.

Does anyone have a canary blenny? I guess these things are venomous. Maybe they only bite if they're somewhat provoked. They sure are beautiful though.

I like the midas Blenny but I guess they might get more aggressive in smaller tanks.

On live aquaria there is a Bundoon Blenny, also cool looking and venomous.

I have been going over fish choices for bio cube 8 and may go with a blenny. The tank is in my bedroom and my wife loves blennies so thats probably whats going in there.

The midas blenny is not as apt to bite as everyone always says and thinks. For the most part, they behave like other blennies, being fairly timid creatures, especially when encountering us human interlopers doing things like scrub downs or water changes. Exercise the same caution you would with a lionfish when you work in the tank, making sure you are always aware of his location, and keeping in mind the potential for a venomous bite.

However, when left alone, they are a bit more outgoing that other blenny varieties, often coming out for swims or patrols about the territory. Here's the rub, though, midas blennies can be bullheaded and aggressive when kept in smaller tanks, especially when their tank mates are pushovers, often nipping and biting at them to try to "evict" the undesired fish from their territory. So, in a nano-tank, 15-gallons or lower, I might just recommend the midas if kept by himself.

My manager and I used to love ordering them, keeping anywhere from one to three in stock whenever they were available. Beautifully colored animals with an absolutely strikingly shaped lyretail. Very cool blennies. We never had an issue with keeping them with other fish in 34.5G stock tanks with other species.... just not anything smaller than a chromis or pseudochromis. Any smaller than that stood a good chance of being massacred.

I have a cute midas blenny in my 38G tank. But, alas, this guy has an attitude. He has his "turf" and he will defend it viciously! hehe I have just removed a new flame angel from my tank in part because the blenny wouldn't let him anywhere near his rock holes! hehe He is about 4" now, so they do get a little bigger than other blennies. Probably not a good choice for a community 10G tank. Maybe by himself, but I wouldn't put him in a small tank with other fish. A smaller, more timid variety might be better.

Good luck with your choice! :D

Colin,
I picked up a bundoon blenny from the Coral Corner, very cool/pretty little fish. Started eating in a couple days.

I've got a Bi-color blenny in my 20g long tank. He's about 2 1/2 to 3" in size. Not sure about a 10g tank, but i guess it would all depend on the size of the blenny and how you have your tank setup/arranged. I don't really see a prob. just don't overstock it, and you should be fine.....

I have a bicolor blenny in my 24G Nanocube. He is pretty cool. But I don't see him picking at the rocks much. I've read that they may pick on firefish and I took the chance. Unfortunately the firefish came out of hiding when I was at work and the blenny bit him twice and killed him. :( You could tell it was him because the bite marks were exactly the size and shape of the mouth.

go with the bicolor dude....i have one in my 12g nano, and he's rad. he's super spastic though...if you're thinking about going open-top, you should probably stop considering blennies. in fact, i was messing with my tank yesterday with the top wide open, and he jumped about 9 inches out of the water right in front of me. kinda crazy. they will nibble on the rocks more if you feed every other day instead of everyday, in my experience.

I have always loved the lawnmower/eyelash blennies. I have a lawnmower right now that is great. He eats algae off of the glass, rocks, etc. so he's a great addition. He's got great personality and perches everywhere...even my hand when I upgraded my 15 to a 20g. You can find them quite small these days and I don't think they grow too quickly. Mine's been about 2 1/2" since I purchased him about 6 months ago.

I have a tail spot in my 12g with my harlequin serpent star and they have been in there for a year and no problems. Tail spot has gorgeous colors, check him out if you want color.

im keeping a scooter blenny in my 10 gallon and he loves it i dont think he could be happier. its a really funny fish to add to you tank. feeding them is a little tricky you have to give him what he wants or he most likly wont eat much if you have live rock and other "things" in your tank he should do just fine. all's you really have to do is make sure he has plenty of sturctures to play around on.
