Keeping multiple angels in FOWLR???

Hi guys. I am about to start a 180g fowlr tank. I was planning to have a Imperator(emperor) angel, gold flake angel, blue face angel and bandit angel in the tank. Is this possible or am I setting myself up for failure. I currently have about 2yrs experience with reef tanks. Currently I have a blue angel and flame angel together in a 75g mixed reef and they are doing great. Was wondering if the angels I mentioned above were in a 180g, would they be okay? Any advice reguarding keeping thesee beautiful fish is welcome. Thanks

I currently have a queen angel, chrysurus angel, blueface angel, goldflake angel , flagfin angel and 3 flame angels in a 240 with no problems.

Thanks for your quick reply ariel47. I would love to see pics of your tank. Do you have any pics...Much appreaciated.

sorry I don't know how to load pictures here[not a very good picture taker either] all my fish was purchase as juvi's. Except the goldflake it was 4". I bought the queen 2 years ago from sealife.net, it was very small. the others came from reefhotspot.

I have 5 angels in my 290: Chrysurus, Blue Line, Regal, Goldflake, and a juvi Emperor. There is alot of caves and hiding places to curb aggression, which has been really minimal to this point. I will see a chase or two, but no real aggression that causes injuries. I tried to not add angels from the same family, other than the juvi- Emp and Chrysurus.

richieboy - effective aquascaping, good circulation, and the correct order of introduction - and a reasonable size differential will all help.

in short, it is certainly doable - however, I consider mixed angelfish communities to be one of the most advanced areas of the hobby - it is not something you can read up and study, like reefing for example..... there are no clearly defined steps - you can do everything "right" and still cras and burn..... understanding and recognising fish behaviour and indicators is the key, and this is something that takes time and experience to "tune" into........

But you gotta start somewhere...... most likely conflict would be blue face / emporer...... I would get a slightly bigger blueface and introduce it before the emporer, but after the other two......

It seems that one of the more unsuccessful angel pairings is between the blue face and emperor. Emperors just seem to hate blue face angels. It is most likely because of an almost identical body shape. If I had to guess, they likely cant even tell the other is a different species. Of course, Thats not to say it can't or isn't being done, they just seem to be harder to mix than some of the other angels. I have seen 2 or more adult Emperors being kept successfully in the same tank. Give it a shot! Just make sure you have a back up plan incase it doesnt work.

I got back into SW back in March of 2006 with a aquapod 24g and immediately added a 75g 2 months later. Started the 75g 3 flame angels (after seeing Jaken's thrd on Flameangel group) and a juv emperor. Couple of months later I added a juv blueface and had to take it out immediately due to the emp. About 6 weeks later the BF got fat and all the fins recovered I re-introduced it back in and this time around it wasn't so bad but the emp is still the king and the BF will avoid the emp's path. Last September when I moved the tank crashed and losing 75% of the fishes and all the angels and tangs died...they never got the chance to see their new tank. I'd to start the angelfish tank from scratch with the current 180g. This time I went with 6 FAs and a juv emp, 3 weeks later I added the juv BF and I thought hell was going to break loose and backup plan was in place. Guess what? They got along fine they don't chase each other and they don't avoid each other's path. They certainly know each other's presence but they have goten comfotable that they will swim by each other in the caves without moving away from each other. This was a dream come true getting these two to accept each other and hopefully they will remain this way as they grow together.

Goldflake and bandit shouldn't be a problem with the other angels but I can't speak on the Blue ange as I never kept one. I strongly advise you to get a bandit under 4" and ideally 3" and they will be easier to get them to eat and adapt.

Like Matt said this is not something you can read up on. There're so many variable and every fish is different. I've spent hours and hours watching them after introducing new fish into the tank, covering with towles completely, go dark for 2 days sometimes, intervene by taking one out. Be prepare for the worst and have a backup plan in place and you should be fine to try. The key as everyone already mentioned try to add them together or not too far apart otherwise one will get established and it will be so much harder to get it to work.

Click on the red house and you'll see a short video of the tank back in February. Below is a clip from last month after I added colinis, venustus and burgess butterfly.

Hello, I have the same tank as you and I had a goldflake and emperor angel living together. The Emp. was there first and was in the tank for about 4 months and then I added the Goldflake. There were no aggression issues whatsoever. Unfortunately the Goldflake just died without any sign of disease or stress after about month in the tank. I think it may of been something internal but he was treated before entering the tank. Well the main point is that there was no aggression between the two. If you throw a blueface in the mix I think you may have issues and I think your tank is too small for the combo. My tank is a bit small for an adult emp. as it is but I have a 300 waiting in the wings for him. Sorry I must tell everyone I have a Tinker's coming tomorrow and am so pumped about getting him!! Here's a couple of pics of the GF and Emp. Regards, Tim

Currently i have an ~5 inch asfur (adult colors) a coral beauty, a half black, and a bicolor with no problems...still looking for a good flame (every flame i have seen in the last 6 months has had eye problems so i have not bought one) iam also looking for 2 large angels to add to the mix but not sure which ones at this point.
Good luck with your adventure i will be tagging along

I have an almost 10" Emperor, 9" blueface, 6" Queen and they are all getting along quite nicely. I have had the Emperor and Blueface together for almost 3 years.

I just ordered a Personifer angel to the collection as I am in the process of building a 500g home for them.

Once the 500g is up and running I plan on adding the following:

Scribbled angel
Goldflake angel
and a Clarion angel (down the road)

I have never had a problem putting large angels (Queen, Emperor) and small angels together (flame, coral beauty), or even Large angel juvenile with adult. But I have had people recommend against putting angels of different (species??) together like holocanthus and pomocanthus in tanks under 200 gallons. I would be interested to see if there is any merit to that idea.
