Kenya Tree Question (Pale Grey)

Ok, so I did a search and found a couple threads where is said if it shrinks up and turns grey it will shed in a few days and come back bigger and better.....

Well, how about grey for a month? I dont know how old it is but it has been in my tank for over a year. At its peak the top would measure 10-12" across. It has been shrunk up and grey for about a month now.

All of my parameters are what I would consider normal except the water hardness which comes in at around 6. I have been doing weekly water changes the last month, going between 5-20 gal at a time. I do have a "sprout" that came off a few months ago and attached nearby and it looks fine.

Any ideas? It has been healthy for over a year in my system so I dont think its light, flow, etc...

I'll try to take a current pic, here is one from a few months ago.

Note the frag to the right and down is fine.

With my softies, I'm usually not worried if just one of the colonies is upset... They go through phases like that, and might "shed their skin" after a couple of days, but as long as the others nearby aren't upset as well, I don't worry. Kenya tree is particularly hardy, and will spread like wildfire if kept unchecked. I wouldn't worry about it.

i am wondering if the xenia is stinging it? i am not sure who packs a bigger punch...but as noted above they are pretty hardy, and if was budding that is pretty typical of a happy coral....as long as there is nothing irritating it i am sure it will open up again...watch you fish, cleaners, worms/ shrimp etc, see if they are bugging it...once you are sure nothing is bothering it, and your water parameters are where they should be, it should come around...alkalinity of 6 is dangerously low though...i would slowly bring that back up to atleast 8-9 dkh...i usually like mine to be around 10, but never lower then 8.

It should just be a phase that happens it happens to my Kenya for about 2-3 days and then comes back what looks like even bigger then before!!

Well it is coming out tonight... it has been laying over for the last 4-5 days and the center started rotting out and dropping branches.

I agree with NanoReefWanabe. Your KH should be higher. I have seen my Kenya tree stay closed for a couple of days when it is shedding. I know that it does not like the KH to swing very low or it will close and not respond until my KH gets back up into my correct KH range or 10 to 12.
Make sure you bring your tank back up slowly or the other coral and fish will not like the large change.

Good Luck

I have been working on trying to get it back in line. I'm still not sure why it got out of line though... which is puzzling. The "sprout" next to it is doing just fine.

I have always had to keep up with KH on a weekly basis. I used to have to add 20ml of Salifet KH buffer a week until I installed my Calcium reactor. Once I got it dialed in life became much easier.
