I have seen the whole colony go down and through its slumps, however something seems different wit this, it is almost as if the stalks on the upper left of this colony are dying. Turning white and shriveled to nothing and melting.

3 days difference.... The only thing was that the tanks temp probe lost its mind and kicked on the tanks lights, heater, chiller, and all kinds of other crazy stuff at 4 in the morning on the night of the 4th.

I was able to get up, get everything back under control, unplugged everything and run it manually Friday until I could get a new temp probe Saturday morning. Tank reached 76 but thats it, lights and everything else were as usual.

I just found it odd that this one spot and not the whole colony is collapsing, the frags in the frag tank are fine, half of this thing is thriving but its almost as if something attacked the top of it on the left side and its all but gone.

Thoughts?

I dont have much to share other than I had an invasion of kenyas from one frag. My whole 46 had little pieces of it growing and turning into large trees within a few weeks. I started to tend to my tank more (weekly larger water changes) and dose. As soon as I changed my husbandry, all of the kenyas shriveled up and disappeared. I have maybe 2-3 left and they are stunted.

I would say one of two things is causing this:

1- High ALK, mine tends to hate it if my ALK goes above a certain point.
2- The tank is very clean(This is a good thing)

I normally use this coral and xenias as indicators of nutrient problems or parameters problems.

• If the coral is healthy looking and very bright, the water is kind of dirty and needs changing.
• If the coral looks sad and dark, water is clean.
• If the coral starts turning white, my ALK could be higher than normal.

This is just my experience and not necessarily the case for your tank.

I used to run this tank as SPS only but had health issues that caused me to have to sell off and just sit back, I have been turning it around now for a while keeping just softies and getting water back in check, nitrates, phosphates that sort of thing.

Alk is tested on the regular, I usually just check to see where calcium is and magnesium after a water change. Alk is rock steady at 8 so far.

Even though the wife and I were like "glad its going away" its still baffles me that it took a turn for the worse when everything seems to test out that okay.

There is no doubt that a few more water changes and the cheato ball grooming will eventually do away with these types of corals, (Never had issues with Nitrates or phosphates before, even had to go as far as turning off the skimmer and over feeding) Still odd to see the decay that can take place in a couple days.
