KH Emergency!

dismayed

New member
I've been struggling with low PH the last few days. I added the appropriate dose of Reef Buffer, and yesterday my PH went up to 8.3 and KH was 12. Just now I tested my water again and now PH is at 7.9 but KH is at 16!

The KH seems way too high at 16. Should I do an emergency water change?

Thanks.

Unfortunately you've experienced exactly the reason why pH buffers are bad. No reason to stress though, the alkainity (KH) will fall on it's own. I'd leave it be for now. Low pH is due to high Co2 levels in the tank in most cases. Simply opening some windows and letting fresh oxygen into your house will cure it in most cases. The alkalinity on the other hand needs to be dealt with in another way. The use of pH buffers is not a good long term solution as you've experienced the negative effects they can have already. Arm & Hammer baking soda will raise your alkalinity with little to no effect on pH. I would recommend getting on a balanced alkalinity/calcium plan. I use a 2-part suppliment that delivers a balanced ratio of both, dosed on a daily basis to keep up with the tank's demand. Below are a couple of articles for you to read. If you have any questions, just ask. ;)

Target:
7-11 dkh alkalinity
380-450 ppm calcium
1250-1350 ppm magnesium
