QT size would depend on the largest fish you were going to put in there. For most fish using a 20 gallon should be fine. Larger fish especially larger tangs may require something larger as they like more room to swm.

Agreed. QT size will depend on the size of the fish you plan on purchasing. Like what Tin_Whistler said, a 20-29g should be sufficient for most fish. However, if you plan on buying larger tangs/angels, etc., a 55g will be a better choice for its 4-foot length.

Ok, I have my 40 gallon QT, got some pvc pipe in it, an air stone, and in tank pump going with one piece of live rock, and 1 rock.

I'm going to start netting my main tank fish.

What temp should my QT be?

What should I do with the gobies? If I put them in the QT, they sand sift. Should I have sand in there for them or will they be ok without sand?

Should I leave my clams, snails, etc. in my main tank?

Should I be putting a pinch of food in the main tank during this QT period or is the oyster stuff I feed my corals going to be good enough?

Do live rocks require the norm 78-80 deg?

If I can get all the fish into my tank tomorrow, I'm going to begin hyposalinity in that tank right?

77-78 F remember dissolved oxygen is higher at lower temperatures

To store live rock, get a 40 gallon container (food safe) and a power head. Room temperature should be fine.

Since the fish should already be eating you can start hypo right away, though lower the salinity slowly. In the future when you QT fish before adding them to the tank make sure they’re eating first before doing treatment unless they run the risk of dying without immediate treatment.

If you’re doing hypo make sure to mark the water level on your tank and keep it filled to that line. If your salinity raises at all it’ll render the process useless.

For water changes get an ammonia alert badge to warn you of ammonia. I don’t think daily changes are always necessary, however you want to make sure the water is as clean as possible since there won’t be any natural filtration going on. Keep an eye on the badge and change the water as needed. I’d recommend keeping premixed water on hand as you don’t want to add freshly mixed saltwater to the tank.

As far as parameters go ammonia, and the amount of oxygen in the tank is your biggest concern

Daily water changes are needed if you detect ammonia and/or nitrite, which could rise to dangerously high levels in an uncycled QT (which I assume yours is) and heavy bio-load. 40g is not a lot of water and if you put all your fish in DT into 40g, you'll start seeing ammonia pretty soon, if the QT is not cycled.

In my experience, when I did hypo the very first time I didn't have a cycled QT. I put all my fish from my old 150g DT into the 55g QT. I started seeing ammonia right away, and then nitrite in the next week. Nitrite went as high as my test kit could read (I believe 5-10ppm), and I had to do two large water changes per day to knock that down, coupled with dosing the tank with prime. Even with those actions, I still lost half of my fish. It was a grilling experience for me and I swore I'd never put new fish into DT without proper QT procedure anymore.

they likely carry the parasite in their gills...QT them too...don't worry about the sand
