killed the tank

Sorry to here that but I have to ask... Was there no float switch/valve? Your post makes it sound like you were running your RO directly into the tank.
 
why would you run the RO right into the tank?

Anyways sucks for your loss.... keep a journal and never do that again. :)
 
In the future- Home depot 44 gallon trash can. Fill trash can with ro/di water. Every morning scoop 3 gallons of water into tank. Works for me anyhow and I have a 225 gallon system. Sorry to hear that you now have a freshwater tank. Did you have alot of fish and coral?
 
I use the JBJ auto topoff unit, it pumps from my 44 Gallon Brute can with a MJ1200, I have 2 floats that will shut it off if needed, and plus the unit stops pumping after 30 seconds just in case.
 
I have known a person or two who needed to topoff their tank and didn't have any water in their storage containers, so they just ran a line directly from ro/di to the tank and turned it on, planning to turn it off later before they overflowed. I don't think either of theirs did, but I've overflowed too many buckets in the past to trust myself on that method. I've got a 20g AGA tank I use as my topoff reservoir with a Tunze osmolator in it. Awesome little topoff setup with laser siting, float switch backup safety sensor, and emergency shutoff of the unit if it runs too long so as not to overflow the tank.
 
I run the ro/di straight to the tank. My wife then asked if I wanted to go to Dairy Queen. The vanilla cone was very good but turned out to be more expensive then the 2 dollars that was advertised on the board. Not much corals and had five fish in it. 2 Clowns, 2 Bangai and a six-line wrasse.

I will start to fill the brute cans from now on.
 
Even using it into the brute cans you should use some sort of autoshut off for your RO/DI. Kent and Spectrapure make some.
