Killer Frogspawn?

Anyone want to try and explain this one?

How long have you had the bangaii? Its common for them to die within a few weeks of buying them if its a new purchase.

My dad just gave me his branching frogspawn yesterday, and it shot out about 40 "darts" or w/e they are called. I've been stung and bitten by many things (corals, anemones, fish, crabs, octopus) but that hurt more than anything yet, and I now have a red sting mark and swelling around it and it ITCHES.

I have a whole new appreciation (fear) of frogspawns !!!!

sorry for the hijack...

ok my hand is getting worse. I'm not really allergic to anything, but my hand is getting red and puffy around the sting, and this sting is starting to look funky and getting hard and hmmm....I don't know how to describe it. I need to find my camera. It's not really that bad, but the fact that it is getting worse makes me a little nervous.

THere seem to be two varieties of frog: a finegrained dotty one and a fat pillowy one. Mine is very puffy and pillowlike, and has very little sting to it. I've never had the other sort.

LadyFsu, I'd recommend holding your hand under running hot water, maybe rubbing it down with vinegar, and if it keeps swelling, maybe taking some Benedryl. You've got a serious allergic reaction there, even from a not-usually-serious source. If you get rapid heartbeat or throat swelling, call 911.

Once you sensitize yourself to marine stings, latex gloves are a very good idea.

This happened 2 days ago though :( ...and I get stung all the time, but this is definately NOT normal....maybe I'll visit the doc just in case. He's really cute too :D !

....and I don't like the title of this thread anymore, lol

I had a problem whn I was stung by my anemone while cleaning my tank. I used to get welts that were itchy and hot and if I would scratch them, it would spread and swell up severly. I wound up in the emergency room while on vacation in New Jersey for Christmas, they ran every test they could and could not figure it out.
They gave me IV antibiotics, a steriod pack, benadryl and I had to put Hydrocortisone cream on it as soon as it would start. It was about a year before these welts stopped appearing.
Still dont rerally know what happened, but my body obviously did not interact well with the anemone.
Try come 2% hydrocortisone cream and 2 benadryl and see if that helps.

I also have a frogspawn whose sting is extremely intense and I am very sensitive to it. I work with corals, anemones etc but I react the most from this particular frogspawn. All I have to do is lightly brush up against it and the red hard welts form which itch and hurt at the same time. I usually don't do much to remedy the problem since it occurs frequently but what everyone has suggested - hot water, vinegar, Benedryl etc are some great ideas. The swelling usually goes away by the next day and after a couple days all discoloring disappears. Of course, if you are getting worse instead of better seek medical attention. You should be proud to have such a healthy frogspawn but please be aware and use caution with it!

I didn't go to the doc...just called. He told me to take benedryl and called in an antibiotic for infection.

It might look a little better as far as the redness/swelling spreading around it, but the welt looks a little worse and itches like crazy. Itches all near it too.

It's funny (now) but I just have handled it several times with no prob, been stung/bit by many things with no prob, I have no allergies that I know of...this one just got me good!!

Thanks for asking!

Hmm...now I'm supposed to frag it and give one head back to my dad, lol! Maybe I'll think about wearing gloves....maybe 2 sets....I have a whole box I could wear. Then I'll get my goggles, mask, long clothes AND A SLEDGEHAMMER AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF IT!!! Of course with my luck, that little jerk will shoot me in the butt!

~loL~ sometimes we develop allergies to things over time.
If you scratch it, does it get worse? Like its angry? One of the nurses did some research and thought it could be sea lice inside me, but the doctors never backed it up.
Good luck!

Very good point, allergies can be formed over time so be careul, often the first reation is not bad, then the second is worse and third can be deadly if left untreated. Be careful around this guy and like the above poster mentoned if you ever have difficulty breathing or swelling of the face/tongue or anywhere else after touching this coral ro being in the tank call for help immediatly, Anaphylaxis comes on VERY quick in some cases and can be deadly........ not to mention really sucks to be treated for. I once had a allergic reation to an antibiotic that I had taken in the past with no problems, 3 days in the hospital and now I am so sensitixed to the antibiotic I cant even touch a bottle of it without gloves on. Be safe and wear gloves!
