Killer Mushroom

Over the last few years I've had a fair number of fish disappear- I bet its been close to a grand worth of various wrasses, gobies, clowns, etc. Not sick and dying, just healthy then Gone.

About 6 years ago I picked up a tiny mushroom as a hitchhiker. Since then its grown into a 6" diameter Amplexidiscus fenestrafer, and split off a second shroom. Now, Im well aware of the reputation of this particular shroom, but I figured most of my fish were far too fast or large to get caught. Until tonight.

I just happened to be watching the tank tonight. I made a comment about the Epaulette/Nigricauda Tang harassing one of my other fish, and that I wish I could catch him to move to the fish only. With 400# of rock in a 240 though, I didnt stand a chance.

I looked away at another part of the tank, and literally 2 to 3 minutes later looked back to see the larger shroom all closed up as if I had dropped in some food. 2 of my 3 fish were accounted for- except the 4" tang. Then I saw the pursed up shroom Bounce from the inside. Had to be water flow... Then it bounced Again! I immediately tried to pry it open, and found my poor tang totally encased, and stuck to the shroom so hard I had to literally tear the thing open to pull the fish out.. after moving the entire package to my fish only :D

The tang is still alive for now, but I was shocked to see just how badly stung he was. The fish in the picture does NOT have ich; every white spot is a burn mark from the mushroom- similar to a Carpet Anemone sting. The other side of him has a large black burn mark running through him, and portions of his dorsal and anal fins are torn to shreds. All of this from less than 3 minutes in the mushroom. So freakin wierd. The tang is now safely in the 125 (and my fish in the reef are thankful), and the shrooms are in my sump.

On a positive mushroom note, I happened to spot a pseudocorynactis in my tank for the first time in in nearly 4 years; I thought they had all disappeared.. woohoo! Of course its another known fish eater, but, its little for now...

wow, do you have any pictures of his mushroom? I had one about 10" across. The thing would close up and look line a huge sweet onion. I too had a fish or 3 disappear, but never thought about the mushroom. Sold the mushroom, but recently got back one of he offspring from it.

Was it a elephant ear mushroom? Because I have about 6 small ones in my tank. If so I think ill sell mine sometime when they get alittle bigger.

That's a better story than my carpet eating a purple tang.
That mushroom must be pretty stront to hold onto a tang like that.

When you were getting it out did you get stung at all?

Pizzaman- I thought about taking pictures, but was moving too quickly to grab the camera. I wanted the tang out of there as fast as possible. Its just like you said though- it looks like a coin purse or an odd onion when its cinched closed.

Motley- Some people call them that, though I always thought of a different shroom (Rhodactis mussoides) as an elephant ear. Ive always called it just a Giant Cup Mushroom.

Okkie- Im not doing anything with him just yet. Ill watch the burn sites for infection, but I dont think theres a lot that can be done. Im just hoping there wasnt enough venom injected to kill the fish (havent looked at him yet today).

Szwab- Your purple tang popped into my head the moment I realized what was going on in there. I didnt get stung- I've handled that shroom many times before with not so much as it being sticky. There was an incredible amount of thick mucous coming out once I freed the tang though. Im wondering if the mucous contains digestive enzymes to help break down prey that large before getting swallowed entirely- I have absolutely nothing to back that idea up though.

Heres a couple pictures of my Amplexidiscus, max size was 16inches. Ive split the main mushroom, I have 2 that are about 6in in diameter from the split, and 2 4inchers that grew up from frags left behind when I removed the big one from my tank. Ive not lost any fish to mine, but Im sure Ive just been lucky with that.

How is the tang doing Aaron????

Looking much better! You can still make out the spots, though they have faded significantly. The only real problem spot seems to be his dorsal; a section of it continues to disintegrate, though it seems to be slowing down. Ill be interested to see how long it takes for a full recovery. I'll try to post an updated pic once he is cleaned up again.

Great news I thought for sure it would end up being one of those looked better today dead tomorrow things (sorry for the bluntness) I just figured there was little hope.

Nope. Thats a Rhodactis, rather than Amplexidiscus. That said, those are known fish eaters too, but not nearly as aggressive.

Do you think this is the same type

Agree with Phishy, thats a Rhodactis. If you look at the open picture of my Amplexidiscus there is a ring around the outer edge, about 1in or so in from the edge. That ring is a sure indicator of Amplexidiscus, and forms when they are around 4in in diameter, in my experience.

Well Mark sorry to disappoint, but he is alive and kicking ;) The spots are gone, though he has lost some weight (stress..?). The patch of dorsal that was sloughing off has finally quit, and while its not grown back yet, there's no sign of infection. Eating like a champ and very active again. Ill try to get an updated picture as his fin heals up.
