Kingston Coal Ash Spill

You all been following this? Pretty crazy stuff! Largest environmental disaster of its kind in US history, AFAIK, right in our backyard. Over 300 acres of semi-hazardous waste (EPA keeps wafing on this issue)... (100x the volume of the Exxon Valdez spill in coal ash sludge for some perspective). Luckily, nobody human was hurt. Can't say the same for the fish. Emory and Clinch rivers are trashed. Here's a fish-specific link: http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2009/jan/03/tennessee-valley-authority-spill-could-endanger-st/ Lots of additional links in the middle page. The Senate Hearing Report PDF linked there is pretty interesting, if you're into that sort of thing...

It will cost >$100 million to clean up, and they could have fixed the impoundment in 2003 for $25 million when it was found faulty. TVA CEO Kilgore said: "The most expensive solution wasn’t chosen, and obviously, that looks bad for us."

Who's going to pay for it? Paid in part by rate hikes, be there no doubt...

.....and there is another now:

It's really sad and frankly disturbing owing to the amount of power TVA has in this region, especially with regard to the natural resources in the state. I'm very disappointed.

I really feel sorry for all the people that had saved up for their lake houses and now they are trashed.

Yes I believe they have already stated we are going to pay for it through rate hikes although I can't find the article now:rolleyes:

Been meaning to say Hello fishdoc11, I am a friend of Angela's and have seen your corals first hand also your tank looks great! The local news in Nashville has already said that the TVA will indeed recoup the cleanup cost Thur rate hikes! I'm sure there will be lawsuits for years to come regarding property damages, and be assured that will be passed along also either way nobody wins. It's odd to me that profits were never mentioned to pay for any of the mess! go figure the taxpayer always looses.

Well, so long as the actual problems are taken care of rather becoming a $$$ feeding frenzy. I hate all the scaremongering this week by the likes of Erin B. and the mass tort lawyers trying to take their 40% off the top.

Somebody I know was on the lake when it happened and he said it was like a 12' tall tsunami passing him by. At one point, the lake went dry under him and he was sitting on the bottom.
