Knowledge required for job at LFS?

Find a good paying job and keep your tank going. I could've easily got a job at a lps but they generally don't pay well. I'd rather take care my tank than deal with bosses and customers all day. Luckily I've got a LPS that I can hang out at give advice.

I made $6.00 (when the minimum wage was $5.15, it is now $6.75) and then got commission on fish and tanks that I sold when the total came to more than $300. The commission was 10% of the sale and was given at the end of the month.

Just an opposite side of the coin here... better LFSs will NOT refuse to hire you based on knowledge unless they're specifically lookinf for someone with knowledge. Most entry level positions in your busier, better, LFSs are going to be grunt-level clerk positions. Many owners and managers, as well, of these shops are more than willing to work with the knowledge you have if you have the willingness to work for the wages offered. Good shop owners will also limit what you're allowed to do based on your knowledge and experience, and will adjust your duties to your abilities. Bear in mind, I'm talking about a multi-employee, busy, and better, shop, not one where there are one or two employees per shift not counting the owners/managers.

I've seen that at the shop that I frequent. They have the few guys who own the shop do most of the fish related stuff (bagging, answering questions, etc) and have some other staff for cashier, cleaining, stocking, etc.

Overal though, someone who has a ton of experience in fishkeeping is probably older and wants a well paying job. LFS aren't high margin businesses that can't afford to pay their employees a lot of money. So they usually hire high school/college age people who they can train to get by. Obviously, this is a gross oversimplification and some do have very good employees, but it's true of most of the business.
