the time has come to start my 5.5g build thread.
this will be an office tank containing hardy, mid to low light corals and inverts.
filtration will consist of live rock, circulation, and weekly water changes.
equiptment: Coralife 18w mini pc
rio 180 mini power head (will watch for temp issues)
Theme: the tank was constructed using decorative molding and 1x2 pine stock.
i treated the wood with a chestnut finish, followed by a coat of sanding sealer (sanded with steel wool), and finaly coated with a spray clear polyurathane to seal aqainst moisture.
i originaly planed to build an internal overflow similar to that used by 2salty in another thread, but was concerned that it would lead to evaporation problems over the weekends. instead i went with a shorter design that will conceal the powerhead and prevent sand from entering the pump intake
i also added a peice of eggcrate to the top in order to keep snails or other miscelanious creatures out of that area. it will also allow me to reclaim some of the area lost to the pump housing.
you can also see that i covered the plexy with oyster shells and sand. i felt that this would create a cleaner, more natural look. i hope to hide as much eqiptment as possible as it would be unsightly in a tank this small.
i have a feeling that this tank will evolve as the project continues, but here is the tank as it sits now.
the equiptment is part of a gift (to arive via UPS), and at the moment i am happy with the choice. however, in the future i may upgrade the pump if i cant get the flow i need and possibly retrofit a 70w mh into the coralife fixture instead of pc.
anyway let me know what you think. any coments are welcome.
thanks for looking
also, anyone with a simple auto topoff solution for this tank please chime in
