Kole Tang Changing Colors ???

My Kole tang I've had for 6months or so has something strange going on with his face, it looks blotchy like color melting away, do they change colors from juvinile to adult that quick ? He is eating very well and is quite fat and happy but the whole face changing thing is questionable, all paramaters are in check and no problems with any other tank mates. Could it be from running into the rock scape, I do notice him and the sailfin doing some chasing once in a while ??

Can you get a pic? White blotchy spots on the face could be bruises from running into a rock but could also be the start of HHLE. How big is the tank? Sailfin tangs can get quite large and quickly become aggressive in too small of a tank.

75 gallon reef and the Sailfin is the same size as the Kole I dont know how to post pictures, if you tell me how ill do it tonight.

You'll need to create an account on a picture hosting website like Photobucket or Flickr and upload your pics. Once you have done that just click on the insert image icon in the message toolbar and insert the URL of your picture.

If the marks are bruises they should heal up and be unnoticeable within a couple of days unless it keeps re-injuring itself.

The Sailfin may be the same size now but it can grow to nearly 1.5' long. Now imagine it trying to turn around in your tank when it's that big. I would trade it in for something smaller now or at least have new home planned for it when it starts getting bigger in a few months (200G or bigger). The Kole could probably work in a 75G if there is not a lot of rockwork so it has room to swim, but most people will say they need a 100G or larger.
Don't mean to be a downer, just realistic.

NOT a downer at all they were both very small when I got them so I'm about ready for a fish swap anyways, take back get something new to look at, part of the fun of this hobby for me, I don't get hugely attached to my fish like a lot of people I've read on here do. Thanx for the photo instructions ill work on it on my day off I;m working till 9 tonight.

Oops, missed a letter. HHLLE: Hole in Head Lateral Line Erosion. Tangs are particularly more susceptible to this.

Finally have a pic

Finally have a pic

Well, here he is. Hoping someone can explain what is happening......

All fish are good and very happy and healthy.

Parameters are as follows:
nitrate:2
KH:8
Calcium:350
Mag: no reading
Salinity:1.025
PH:0
Ammonia:0
Nitrate:0

Had everything tested at Pruss yesterday.

Why is nothing else affected if I have an ele leak ? How would I know if I do have an electricirty leeking problem ?

What other fish do you have in there? I saw you said you have a sailfin in there. How is he doing? It is a bit strange that the kole is the only one with the markings. From other posts I've seen tangs usually seem like the ones that experience it before other fish. Perhaps they are more sensitive to electrical leaks. Do you get a tingle when your hands go in the water?

yah, definitely HHLLE. Our kole has it. He had a terrible case when he came out of a long copper treatment (long story). He was perfect going in, and looked worse than your fella when he came out. But he would have been a gonner otherwise.

Today, about 6 months post treatment, I'd say about 70% has healed. It is reversable - but you need to know the cause.

Is it stress? (as in the case of ours in a QT for so long) Nutrition? Stray voltage?

How often and how much algae do you feed? What other foods do you feed? If you don't already, I would start supplementing with selcon or another multivitamin. The cause of HLLE is still unknown but the 2 most common cures are moving the fish to another aquarium and improving it's diet. Since you likely can't just move it to another tank I'd start looking into it's diet. ;)

I adjust his diet and see if I can get it cleaned up.
I use the pelets, Ocean Nutrition brown marine algae w/garlic on thier feeding clip every other day or so, Mysis Shrimp, formula 2 flake,Marine quizene.
