kole tang color patterns??

Hi guys, I just picked up a kole tang but i am a little disappointed with the color and pattern. i say that because it looked nothing like i have seen in some pictures. the picks i see show them with horizontal lines that are bluish and a body that is kinda burgundy. the one i got just had dull dots all over not strips. and the body color seemed more brown then burgundy. i was told that it would gain the strips as it got older.

anyone confirm this? i went ahead and picked it up with the hopes that it will color up over time.

You were given bad advice from someone that wanted to make a sale. The one you wanted is a different type of kole tang, they wont change from spotted to lined

Sorry to hear that they ripped you off

damn that sucks. he is def not a good looking as some of the pictures ive seen, but i guess ugly fish need a good home too.:lmao:

after looking through a bunch of images, this is the one that looks most like the one i got.

is this indeed a different kole from this one??

Very much so, the bottom one is the guy I have, IMO much nicer but not everyone agrees. I am sure you could sell yours and buy the nicer one if you want

well its in my QT right now and plan on keeping it there for the next month or so. im hoping all goes well with it. as much as i like the other type of kole, its my own ignorance and not the fishes fault, so i will hang on to it for as long as it lives. no need to put the fish thru more unnecessary stress for me not doing my proper homework.

To be fair the striping and spotting vary depending on where the fish is caught. Regional differences between the same species can be striking but it many times is the same fish. They do gain color as they age.

From LA
C. strigosus has an oval body shape with bold markings that change with maturity. As a juvenile, it has a yellow-gold to tan color combined with striping and spots. When matured, the body color darkens, ranging from blue to burgundy. Depending on what part of the world it is from, it can have either a majority of spots or stripes highlighting the body.

tanks jerpa, i must have underestimated the amount of variation. i just dont see many pictures of the all dotted ones, so it gave me a false impression.

IMO Kole's always seem to look better in pictures than in person. I have never seen one in person that looks as good as the liveaquaria photo above.

I like it! I just bought my kole last week but every time I get near the tank he hides. I'd love to get a picture of him. Mine has the lines but is more purple/Burgandy ish than orange. I noticed when he turns sideways sometimes with the light he looks reddish. Very cool fish

This is a spotted yellow eye tang also name squaretail bristletooth tang. Very nice fish. It will become brown to purple.

Good for you. All fish are beautiful and special once they are in my hands.

Really?
Here's a pic of mine that actually was ordered from LiveAquaria.com a few years ago.

Kole Tangs have always in my reef tanks as they really do a thorough job at picking at the rock and glass, and they are a beautiful fish.
